George Mason Patriots Basketball History

The George Mason Patriots are a Division I school based in Fairfax, Va. George Mason has been a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference since the 2013-14 season, and is the author of one of the greatest Cinderella runs in NCAA Tournament history.

George Mason reached the Final Four in 2005-06, becoming the first school from the Colonial Athletic Association to achieve that feat. The Patriots, who had never before won an NCAA Tournament game, snuck into the field as an at-large and pulled off a series of upsets. The 11th-seeded Patriots overcame enormous odds to beat No. 6 Michigan State, No. 3 North Carolina, No. 7 Wichita State and top-seeded Connecticut in overtime on the way to the national semifinals, where they lost to No. 3 Florida, the eventual national champion. They’re still the lowest seed to ever make a Final Four, matching 1986 Louisiana State, 2011 Virginia Commonwealth, 2018 Loyola Chicago and 2021 UCLA.

The Patriots returned to the tournament in 2008 and again in 2011, when they tied the school record for wins in a season with 27 and advanced to the round of 32.

Coach Paul Hewitt

Coach Jim Larranaga left for Miami the following offseason and was replaced by Paul Hewitt. The Patriots won over 20 games in Hewitt’s first two seasons and made the College Basketball Invitational final in 2013, but they finished just 11-20 during their first run through the A-10 in 2014. After another sub-.500 finish the following season, Hewitt was fired.

Now, Kim English, a former Detroit Pistons guard, is trying to do what neither Hewitt nor Dave Paulsen could do: return George Mason to the Big Dance.

Altogether, the Patriots have made six trips to the NCAA Tournament and four to the National Invitational Tournament. Their most recent postseason trip was the 2017 CBI, which resulted in a first-round loss to Loyola MD.
