Grand Canyon Antelopes Basketball History

The Grand Canyon Antelopes standings are a Division I team based in Phoenix. Upon transitioning from Division II in 2013, Grand Canyon joined the Western Athletic Conference.

It took Grand Canyon until its eighth season at the Division I level, 2020-21, to make the NCAA Tournament. The Antelopes, led by first-year coach Bryce Drew, received a No. 15 seed after sweeping the WAC regular season and tournament titles and were beaten 86-74 by second-seeded Iowa. They finished with a 17-7 record.

Before that, they’d made three appearances in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament, including a quarterfinal run in 2016, and two in the College Basketball Invitational.

Overall, Grand Canyon has been steady since moving up a level. The Antelopes finished below .500 just once over their first nine seasons in Division I and were tabbed the odds-on WAC favorite entering 2022-23.

Much of that was due to the return of junior guard Jovan Blacksher, the preseason WAC Player of the Year as voted on by the league’s coaches and media. However, Blacksher’s season was cut short due to a knee injury.

Grand Canyon has also appeared in 10 NCAA Division II Tournaments and 11 NAIA Tournaments. It won NAIA national titles in 1975 and 1978 behind three-time All-American Bayard Forrest, and again in 1988.

Former three-time NBA All-Star Dan Majerle coached Grand Canyon from 2013-20, amassing a .604 winning percentage. Drew, the former Valparaiso standout and three-time Horizon League Coach of the Year replaced Majerle in 2020 and guided Grand Canyon to the Big Dance for the first time. In Drew’s second year, 2021-22, the Antelopes went 23-8, including 12-5 in conference play.
