Team History

Houston Christian University began playing basketball in 1963-64 as Houston Baptist College and was affiliated with the NAIA. In the 1967-68 season, the Huskies made the move to NCAA Division II and afterwards climbed the ladder again in 1973-74, becoming a Division I team as Houston Baptist University. After five years as an independent, Houston Baptist joined the Trans America Athletic Conference.

Under coach Gene Iba, the Huskies made steady improvement and made their only appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 1984. Iba left after the 1984-85 season, and the Huskies struggled in the 1988-89 and 1989-90 seasons, stopping the program for two years. When Houston Baptist resumed the program, it was as an NAIA program, and the Huskies had a successful run, appearing in the NAIA Tournament for 10 consecutive years between 1998 and 2007.

After the team’s run in NAIA, the Huskies jumped back to Division I for the 2008-09 season, joining the Great West Conference for 2009-10. After four seasons in the GWC, Houston Baptist made the move to the Southland Conference for 2013-14. The Huskies played in the CBI in 2016 and made their last postseason appearance in the 2017 CIT. Before the start of the 2022-23 season, Houston Baptist announced it was changing its team name to the Houston Christian University Huskies.

Houston Christian Huskies FAQs

Have Any Houston Christian Players Been Drafted by the NBA?

Houston Christian has had nine players drafted by NBA teams, although E.C. Coleman is the only one to have played in the NBA. He was a third-round pick in 1973. The player taken the highest, Alvaro Teheran, played for the Huskies for two years and for the Houston Cougars in his junior and senior years. He never made the NBA but did have a lengthy overseas career.

What Is Special About Houston Christian’s Arena?

The Huskies play their home games in Sharp Gymnasium, which was built in 1963, the same year the basketball program began. As a result, it’s one of the smallest arenas in all of Division I basketball. Only USC Upstate, Charleston Southern and Seattle play in smaller arenas.

Why Are Houston Christian Teams Called the Huskies?

On May 11, 1965 the students of Houston Christian voted to adopt “Huskies” as the school’s mascot. The school brought in Toby, an Alaskan Malamute, in 1966, but he was stolen in the summer of 1968. Seven other dogs have served in the role since.
