Team History

The Indiana State Sycamores are a Division I team based in Terre Haute, Ind. Indiana State has been a member of the Missouri Valley Conference since 1976 and is the alma mater of NBA Hall of Famer Larry Bird.

Bird holds several school records, including career points (2,850,) rebounds (1,247,) field goal percentage (.533) and field goals (1,154.) He was a consensus two-time First-Team All-American and in 1979 was unanimously named the National Player of the Year, after leading the Sycamores — in their first appearance in the Big Dance — to the national title game against Magic Johnson and Michigan State. The Sycamores lost 63-52, ending their remarkable season at 33-1.

For his college career, Bird averaged 30.3 points, 13.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists, guiding Indiana State to an 81-13 record. He’s one of four alumni to have their number retired by the school, joining Carl Nicks, Jerry Newsom and Duane Klueh.

Indiana State made its long-awaited return to the tournament in 2000, when it earned an at-large bid after capturing the MVC regular season title. While the Sycamores lost to fifth-seeded Texas, they overcame long odds the next season to beat No. 4 Oklahoma in overtime for their first tournament win in 22 years. Indiana State also made the field in 2011 and lost in the first round to third-seeded Syracuse.

In addition, the Sycamores have three Division II tournament appearances, including a national runner-up finish in 1968, and a NAIA title in 1950. They also had seven members represent the gold-medal winning team at the 1951 Pan-American Games.

Indiana State is currently coached by Josh Schertz, a former seven-time South Atlantic Coach of the Year at Division II Lincoln Memorial in Tennessee. Schertz went 11-20 in his first season at Indiana State, including 4-14 in conference. His Sycamores were ranked seventh in the MVC preseason poll entering his second year.
