The Iona Gaels standings basketball team began to play in 1940, which was when the school first opened. While new teams typically struggle, the Gaels came out of the gate quickly, posting a 14-9 record in their first NCAAB season and going 17-5 in their second year. It wasn’t until the 1954-55 season that Iona posted its first losing record.
The Gaels played as an independent until joining the Metropolitan Collegiate Conference for the 1965-66 season. Iona played in the MCC all four years of its existence, becoming an independent once again after the conference was disbanded following the 1968-69 season. After two seasons in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Metro, Iona was one of the original six Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference teams, which began play in the 1981-82 season.
Despite its small college stature, Iona has been able to lure some big-name head coaches, including Jim Valvano, Pat Kennedy, who is best known for leading the Florida State Seminoles to five NCAA Tournaments, and Rick Pitino.
The Iona Gaels standings have been the class of the MAAC since its inception, having won 13 conference titles. The Gaels have played in the NCAA Tournament 15 times, most recently in the 2020-21 season, and also have seven NIT appearances, with the latest coming in the 2021-22 season.
