Jacksonville Dolphins Basketball History

The Jacksonville Dolphins began to play in the 1948-49 season as a junior college team, becoming a regular in the National Junior College Athletic Association Nationals. The team made the climb to NAIA in the late 1950s and competed in the NAIA District 25 Tournament for four straight seasons, advancing to the NAIA Tournament in 1965.

The Dolphins made the jump to Division I for the 1966-67 season, playing as an independent. Jacksonville went 17-7 in just its third NCAA season and things were looking up, as in 7-foot-2 up, as Artis Gilmore transferred to Jacksonville after two years at Gardner-Webb Community College.

Gilmore led the Dolphins to the NCAA Finals in his first year, only to come up short against UCLA for the title. The Dolphins were upset in the first round of the NCAA Tournament the following year and Gilmore was headed to the ABA.

Return to the NIT and the NCAA Tournament

But Jacksonville’s winning run wasn’t coming to an end anytime soon. The Dolphins went 20-8 in 1971-72 and won the third-place game in the NIT tournament and returned to the NCAA Tournament in 1972-73.

The Dolphins returned to the NIT in 1974, once again playing in the third-place game, although this time they lost to Boston College. Jacksonville joined the Sun Belt Conference for the 1976-77 season and after a couple of down seasons returned to the NCAA Tournament in 1979 and the NIT in 1980.

The Dolphins returned to the NCAA Tournament in 1986 and were in the NIT the following season. Jacksonville then had a postseason drought that lasted more than 20 years. The Dolphins moved to the Trans Atlantic Athletic Conference for the 1998-99 season. The TAAC changed its name to the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2001 and became the ASUN in 2016.

Following an 18-13 record, the Dolphins were invited back to the NIT in 2009 and also appeared the following year after posting 20 wins. Jacksonville played in the CIT in 2011 and again in 2017, which has been its last postseason tournament appearance.
