Kansas State Wildcats Basketball History
Overall
The Wildcats began playing basketball in 1902. The Wildcats joined the Missouri Valley Conference in 1913 under head coach Guy Lowman. After 15 seasons in the MVC, the Wildcats moved to the Big 6. The Wildcats weren’t very competitive in the Big 6 for about 20 seasons.
In 1947-1948, the Wildcats won 20 or more games for the first time in school history under head coach Jack Gardner. They won the conference and went on to the Final Four round of the NCAA Tournament. They went on to have 17 straight winning seasons from 1947-1963. During that span, the Wildcats won 10 conference championships, appeared in seven tournaments and made four Final Four appearances. It was perhaps the best run in Wildcats history.
The 70s were very good for the Wildcats. They were coached by Jack Hartman. During his tenure, the Wildcats won the Big 8 three times, and made the NCAA Tournament seven times. They went on to make the Sweet Sixteen six times and the Elite Eight four times. The Wildcats enjoyed 12 winning seasons during Hartman’s tenure. They ripped off 12 straight winning seasons from 1971-1982. The Wildcats suffered a steep fall off after the 1981-1982 season. They lost at least 14 games in each of Hartman’s last four seasons. Hartman’s last season at the helm was 1985-1986. He finished with a 294-170 overall record.
Lon Kruger was at the helm for the next four years. He led them to a winning record in each of his four seasons at the helm. Kruger is the first coach to lead the Wildcats to the tournament in four straight seasons. Despite the Wildcats never making it past the Elite Eight, 1986-1989 was one of the best stretches in Kansas State Basketball history. Kruger finished his career with an 81-46 overall record.
Average 90s Decade
The Wildcats were average at best throughout the 90s. They managed to make the tournament twice but never made it past the first round. They finished with five winning records and five losing records during the 90s.
Jim Wooldridge coached the Wildcats from 2000-2006. They finished with just two winning seasons under Wooldridge. They had a losing record in conference play and never made the tournament under Wooldridge.
Frank Martin took over in 2007. The Wildcats won at least 20 games in each of his five seasons at the helm. The Wildcats made the tournament in four of his five seasons. In 2010, they made it to the Sweet Sixteen round. The Wildcats earned a #3 ranking in the 2010-2011 AP Preseason Poll. It was the highest preseason ranking in Wildcats history. Martin left for the University of South Carolina after the 2011-2012 season.
Bruce Weber became head coach in 2012. The Wildcats finished with 27 wins in Weber’s first year. Additionally, they won the Big 12. It was the Wildcats’ first conference championship since 1977. The Wildcats also got a bid for the tournament. Unfortunately, they lost in the first round. In his second season at the helm, the Wildcats finished with a 20-13 overall record. They made the tournament again. However, after the 2013-2014 season the Wildcats had two average seasons. Over the next two seasons they compiled a record of 32-33.
Weber and the Wildcats had three straight winning seasons from 2016-2018. They made the tournament in each of those three seasons. In 2019, they finished with a 25-9 overall record and won the conference championship. They were ranked as high as 18th in the AP Poll.
The Wildcats had a 20-58 combined record over Weber’s last three seasons. He was out after the 2021-2022 season. He finished his career with a 184-147 overall record.
Jerome Tang is the current coach at Kansas State. The Wildcats currently have an 11-1 record under Tang.
