UMass Minutemen Basketball History
The UMass Minutemen basketball team has a rich history that dates back to the year 1900, making it one of the oldest college basketball programs in the United States. The team is based in Amherst, Massachusetts, and represents the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Over the years, the program has seen many successes and challenges, with a number of coaches and players leaving their mark on the team’s legacy.
UMass’ most prosperous stretch came in the 1990s under John Calipari. The Minutemen swept the A-10 regular season and tournament titles five straight seasons from 1992-1996, with three trips to the Sweet 16.
In 1996, behind National Player of the Year Marcus Camby, UMass won 35 games, reached No, 1 in the Associated Press poll and advanced to the Division I Final Four. However, the NCAA later vacated that run over former Camby’s acceptance of gifts from a sports agent. Additionally, the NCAA forced the school to return $151,000 in tournament revenue. Calipari resigned following that season and was replaced by longtime assistant Bruiser Flint.
UMass returned to the NCAA Tournament the next two seasons under Flint, but lost both times in the first round. The program’s only other tournament appearance since then was in 2014.
UMass’ postseason history also includes 13 trips to the National Invitational Tournament, including a runner-up finish in 2008. Its all-time record in the consolation tournament is 13-14.
Prior to Calipari, UMass’ most successful coach was Jack Leaman, who went 217-126 (.633) between 1966-79. The Minutemen won the Yankee Conference regular season championship eight times during a nine-year span. Leaman also brought them to six NITs — back when that tournament was a more prestigious event — including the quarterfinals in 1977. Leaman coached several notable names, including Julius Erving. The future NBA legend averaged 26.3 points and 20.2 rebounds during two seasons with UMass (1969-71). He later had his number retired by the school, as did Lou Roe, Camby, Al Skinner and George Burke.
Martin was hired prior to the 2022-23 season, after posting a 171-147 record over 10 seasons at South Carolina. In 2017, Martin took the Gamecocks to the Final Four. He faces tall odds of returning UMass to the tournament, as the Minutemen were ranked eighth in the A-10 preseason poll.
