In the conference tournament, the Tigers made a deep run, ultimately falling to Houston in the championship game. However, they were rewarded with a high seed in the NCAA tournament, where they were able to make a statement with impressive victories over Eastern Washington, Oklahoma State, Gonzaga, and Michigan.

Overall, the Memphis Tigers standings were impressive, finishing 2nd in the American Athletic Conference and making it to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament. Memphis Tigers Basketball History

Overall

The Memphis Tigers were first put together in 1920 as an independent school. In the early 1950s, they made a deep run in the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) Tournament. When the program was recognized in NCAA Division I, they debuted in the NCAA Tournament in their first season with the division.

However, despite the solid start, Memphis will not rise toward consistent success until the early 70s under Gene Bartow. In 1973, the Tigers were an NCAA University Division runner-up. The program took the next step with the arrival of Dana Kirk.

Memphis recruited top-tier talent like Keith Lee and became a perennial power. Lee would not only lead the Tigers’ team stats but also be a three-time All-American. The Tigers were even ranked as high as the top program in 1982-83. They dominated the Metro Conference and made deep runs in the NCAA Tournament, including a Final Four appearance in 1985.

However, Kirk got indicted by a federal Grand Jury for tax evasion and other felony charges. As a result, the program had to vacate its results between the 1981-82 and 1985-86 seasons.

Upon Kirk’s removal, Memphis remained a competitive team, with Larry Finch as the head coach. In the early 1990s, Anfernee Hardway blossomed into a superstar for the school. The future NBA lottery pick dominated the Memphis Tigers’ team stats and was named, by consensus, a first-team All-American in 1993.

Prominence & Invalidation With Calipari

The Tigers reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament in 1992 and the Sweet Sixten in 1995. This would be the program’s peak until John Calipari took over as head coach in 2000. Under him, Memphis rose to prominence.
Calipari recruited blue-chip prospects like Rodney Carney, Chris Douglas-Roberts, and Derrick Rose to the school. The Tigers were ranked as a top-five team for four consecutive seasons between 2005-06 and 2008-09 peaking as the runner-up after 2008’s March Madness. The team also set an NCAA record with 38 regular season wins this year.
Memphis’ historic season was overshadowed by controversy around Rose’s SAT admissions test. The aftermath saw the Tigers’ 2008 season invalidated by the NCAA. And in 2009, Calipari departed for the University of Kentucky.
The program rebounded nicely and under Josh Pastner, remained the team to beat in the Conference USA. But after the 2013-14 season, Memphis fell into mediocrity until Hardaway returned in 2018 and led the team back to the NCAA Tournament in 2022.
