The 2022 Michigan State Spartans standings proved no wrong, finishing with a 19-11 record and an 11-8 record in Big Ten play. Led by head coach Tom Izzo, the Spartans played their home games at Breslin Center in East Lansing, Michigan, and competed in the Big Ten Conference.
While they did not make the NCAA tournament, the team had a number of standout players, including recruit Jaden Cooper, who impressed coaches with his skills despite being overlooked in his recruitment.

Michigan State Spartans Basketball History
Beginnings
The Michigan State Spartans have competed in 24 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, the second-longest active run behind Kansas (32) and the third-longest streak ever. It’s safe to say they’re one of the preeminent programs in all college sports.
It took some time to get there, however. Benjamin VanAlstyne, who is third in program history in wins, coached some solid teams in the 1930s, but the Spartans didn’t achieve a national ranking of any kind until the 1951-52 season.
That was the team’s fourth year in the Big Ten, and the Spartans would win the league for the first time in 1957, racing to the Final Four in their first NCAA Tournament appearance.
Michigan State returned to the Big Dance two NCAAB seasons later but would then endure nearly two decades without a postseason berth. There were several sub-.500 campaigns along the way and a handful of coaching changes.
When Jud Heathcote came aboard in 1976, it ushered in a new era of Spartan basketball. Well, that’s not entirely accurate. When Heathcote was able to land the commitment of local star Earvin Johnson, it ushered in a new era of Spartan basketball.
Johnson’s Steamrolled Big Ten Crown
Johnson joined the team for the 1977-78 season as it was coming off a disappointing 10-17 campaign. He hit the ground running, putting forth an incredible all-around game in a 6-9 frame that proved too much for the college game. Michigan State opened 15-1 and steamrolled to its first Big Ten crown in 11 years.
Johnson and company were knocked out of the NCAA Tournament in the Elite Eight by eventual national champion Kentucky, but he and his mates had a taste of success. That would carry them into the following season and culminate in perhaps the most memorable title game in history.
The 1978-79 Spartans didn’t race out of the gate in the same manner and found themselves just 4-4 in Big Ten play at the end of January. They went undefeated in February, however, and were relatively untested in their push to the title game against Indiana State and their superstar, Larry Bird.
In what remains the most watched college basketball game on record, Johnson’s crew outlasted Bird’s 75-64 in the first of many clashes between the two greats. Johnson was named the Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player and would go No. 1 to the Los Angeles Lakers just a few months later.
The Michigan State Spartans standings sheet showed a squad that shot an incredible 52.7% from the floor that season. But with Johnson’s departure, the Spartans struggled to stay at the top. Heathcote did have several more NCAA Tournament appearances, but the team never got past the Sweet 16.
When he left, he was part of the process to name a successor and he went with Tom Izzo, an assistant for 11 years under Heathcote.
Izzo: A Fantastic Choice
It proved to be a fantastic choice, as Izzo has been the guiding force in Michigan State’s long run of success ever since. His first two teams were very ordinary and only had one NIT berth in that time, but Izzo was loading up the roster with the talent that would take the Spartans back to glory.
In recruiting “The Flintstones,” a trio from nearby Flint that included Mateen Cleaves, Morris Peterson and Charlie Bell, Izzo had some of the program’s best talent since Johnson left. The 1997-98 team was the one that started the program’s streak of 24 straight NCAA Tournament appearances. The next season saw the Spartans reach the Final Four, and in 1999-2000 they took home the crown with a win over Florida in the national title game.
Cleaves was the engine, Peterson the top scorer and Jason Richardson – a freshman with incredible athleticism who would one day win back-to-back NBA Slam Dunk championships – provided a big spark.
Izzo again reached the Final Four in 2001, 2005, 2009 (lost in the title game to North Carolina), 2015 and 2019. Along the way, he’s produced several NBA talents, including Draymond Green, Gary Harris, Zach Randolph and Jaren Jackson Jr., just to name a few.
2021-22 Season
The Michigan State Spartans finished the 2020-2021 NCAAB season with an overall record of 15 wins and 13 losses. They had a conference record of 9 wins and 11 losses, which placed them in 9th place in the Big Ten Conference standings. Despite their record, the Michigan State Spartans were selected to participate in the NCAA Tournament as a play-in team in the First Four rounds.
In the First Four rounds of the NCAA Tournament, the Michigan State Spartans faced off against UCLA. Unfortunately, they were defeated in overtime, ending their season. Nonetheless, the Michigan State Spartans standings reflected resilience throughout the season and earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the 23rd time in the last 24 seasons.
It’s worth noting that the Michigan State Spartans standings can vary from season to season, and they will continue to compete in the Big Ten Conference and the NCAA Tournament in the future.
