Team History

The Ole Miss Rebels are a Division I program located in University, Miss. Ole Miss, an original member of the Southeastern Conference, is coached by Kermit Davis.
Mississippi has made nine trips to the NCAA Tournament, most recently in 2019 after Davis took over. The Rebels went 20-13, including 10-8 in SEC play, and lost in the opening round to No. 9 seed Oklahoma, 95-72.

The Rebels’ deepest tournament run came in 2001 under Rod Barnes, when they won a then-program record 27 games and reached the Sweet 16 as a No. 3 seed, where they lost to second-seeded Arizona. Besides that, the Rebels have had scarce success in the Big Dance, advancing past the opening round on just two other occasions. They won first-round games in both 1999 and 2013, and also won a First Four game in 2015, beating fellow No. 11 seed BYU after grabbing one of the tournament’s last at-large bids.

The 2013 team holds a special place in program lore. Not only did it win 27 games, matching the record set by the 2000-01 Rebels, but it also captured the SEC Tournament title for the first time since 1981. In doing so, the Rebels earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, where they beat fifth-seeded Wisconsin but lost to No. 13 seed LaSalle.

Mississippi has also appeared 13 times in the National Invitational Tournament, where its combined record is 15-13. The Rebels have reached the quarterfinals five times and the semifinals twice, losing in 2008 and 2010. Their most recent postseason appearance came in the 2021 NIT.

Davis, formerly at Middle Tennessee, was hired in 2019 and won SEC Coach of the Year his first season. He replaced Andy Kennedy, who won a school-record 245 games from 2007-18. Remarkably, Kennedy was also the only Rebels coach since World War II to finish with a winning record in SEC play. Following two seasons as an analyst with ESPN, Kennedy returned to coaching in 2020, accepting a job with UAB.

The Rebels finished with losing records in 2020 and 2022 and faced long odds again in 2022-23 as they were picked to finish ninth in the SEC preseason media poll.
Notably, the program has put 19 players in the NBA, including 15 draft picks. One of the most prominent is Terence Davis, who made the NBA’s All-Rookie Second Team in 2020 with the Toronto Raptors after going undrafted. Davis was traded to the Sacramento Kings in 2021.
