Team History

Morgan State lists its first basketball team as playing in the 1930-31 season. The team was strong right from the start, posting a 31-2 record in its first three seasons. The school had nothing but win-loss records until coach Talmadge Hill took over for the 1947-48 season. He remained until 1960, when he was replaced by Howard Wilson, who was 109-141 in his 11 seasons. Nathaniel Frazier took over the program for the 1971-72 season and the Bears’ fortunes quickly changed.

After going 20-8 in his second season, Frazier led the Bears to the Division II championship in the 1973-74 season and they reached the Tournament the following two years but couldn’t repeat as champions. Frazier left after the 1976-77 season to join the New York Knicks as an assistant coach, and Morgan State went downhill again.

The Bears became a member of the MEAC for the 1984-85 season and promptly went 3-25, luring Frazier back as coach. While unable to rekindle his earlier magic, Frazier did take a team that was 23-88 its previous four seasons and have them 15-14 in 1988-89. Once again, Frazier left and Howard posted losing records in 16 of the next 17 seasons, finishing 14-14 in 1998-99 for its only non-losing season.

Todd Bozeman took over a Morgan State team that was 4-26 in 2005-06; two years later, he had the Bears at 22-11 and in the NIT. The following season, 2008-09, the Bears won the conference tournament, earning their first berth to the NCAA Tournament. Morgan State returned the following season in what has been its last NCAA Tournament. The Bears did play in the Basketball Classic tournament following the 2021-22 season.
