Overview of the NC State Wolfpack Standings

Last-Season Standings

The 2022 NC State Wolfpack standings were solid during the whole season. They finished the regular season with a 19-11 record, including a 10-8 record in ACC play. The team was led by senior guard Devon Daniels, who averaged 14.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game.

The Wolfpack got off to a slow start to the season, losing three of their first four games. However, they rebounded and won their next four games, including a big win over #1 seed Purdue in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. They then hit a bit of a rough patch, losing four of their next five games, before winning five of their next six games.

NC State closed out the regular season with wins over Wake Forest and Notre Dame. They entered the ACC Tournament as the #6 seed, but were upset by #14 seed Miami in the second round.

Despite the disappointment in the conference tournament, NC State was still awarded a #10 seed in the NCAA Tournament. They faced #7 seed UConn in the first round, and came away with a 72-68 victory. However, they were then blown out by #2 seed Alabama in the second round, 85-62.

NC State Wolfpack Basketball History

Beginnings

The Wolfpack have undoubtedly toiled in the shadow of their in-state rivals Duke and UNC, and it will take a millennium to match their resumes. However, North Carolina State has produced a few memorable seasons and is one of 15 programs in the country with multiple national titles.

The team won seven league crowns in the old Southern Conference and reached the Final Four of the NIT in 1947 when that was still the premier postseason event. Everett Case was in his first season as head coach and he would average 26.5 wins over his first 10 years at the helm, including a 26-7 mark in 1953-54, when the Wolfpack joined the ACC as one of its charter members.

Case had his first sub-.500 season in 1959-60 and his health began to become an issue, forcing him to retire two games into the 1964-65 season. Press Maravich, the father of all-time great Pete Maravich, took that team to the NCAA Tournament, but left after just two seasons, giving way to Norm Sloan, a former basketball and football player at the school.

Sloan conducted a slow build to greatness, achieving one of the sport’s handfuls of unbeaten seasons (27-0) in 1972-73. That team featured 7-4 Tom Burleson, a two-time All-ACC first-teamer, and a first-year superstar in David Thompson.

Improprieties in Thompson’s Recruitment

Improprieties in the recruitment of Thompson forced the team to be banned from postseason play, but the Wolfpack were freed from restrictions the following season and put together one of the great runs in NCAA history.

A loss to UCLA in the third game of the season may have hampered NC State’s NCAAB odds, but they’d never lose again, winning 22 straight to close out the regular season, both games in the ACC tourney and all four in the NCAA Tournament. Included in the Big Dance run was a revenge victory over the Bruins and Bill Walton in double overtime.

Thompson and Burleson left after that year and Sloan only saw one more NCAA Tournament entry in his final six seasons before he moved on to coach Florida. Enter Jim Valvano, who had enjoyed some success at Iona.

A New York City kid who played at Rutgers, Valvano brought a youthful energy to the program and quickly imported some quality talent to match. He made the NCAA Tournament in his second season, 1981-82, with a roster that included five future NBAers.

Expectations were high for the 1982-83 team, which opened the season ranked No. 16 in the country. However, a 2-4 start in ACC play and two straight losses to Maryland and Virginia as February turned to March left the team squarely on the bubble.

Oh, What a Title Run

Something lit a fire under Valvano’s team, as it defeated Wake Forest 130-89 in the finale of the regular season and then steamrolled through the ACC tournament to clinch a berth in the Big Dance. North Carolina State team stats reflected a solid defensive squad that became enhanced once the postseason rolled around, as opponents in their run to the 1983 title averaged under 62 points per game.

And oh, what a title run it was, as the Wolfpack first knocked off Pepperdine in double overtime before squeaking by UNLV and Virginia by a point apiece en route to the Final Four. After a triumph over Georgia came a title matchup with Houston, a team with perhaps the greatest alternative nickname (Phi Slama Jama) in sports history and two of the NBA’s greatest all-time performers in Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler.

Somehow, Valvano’s squad stayed close and the image of Lorenzo Charles snagging an airball out of the sky and putting it in at the buzzer to win it for NC State is among the most indelible in NCAA basketball history. So, too, is the one of Valvano racing around the frenzied court looking for someone to hug.

Valvano would have seven more years on the sidelines, most of them very good, but his tenure was marred by allegations of a lack of institutional control as it related to the program. The coach was never named in the allegations and several investigations revealed small monetary infractions on the part of some players, but Valvano was still ousted at the end of the 1989-90 season.

The team has made it to the NCAA Tournament 11 times in 32 years since Valvano left and none of those teams got past the Sweet 16. All this while Duke and North Carolina were compiling multiple conference and national titles just a few miles down the road.

Kevin Keatts is the fifth post-Valvano head coach, taking over in 2017. His program is coming off a difficult 2021-22 season in which it lost 15 of its last 20 games to finish 11-20.
