Njit Highlanders Basketball History

There have been some highs but also some unfathomable lows since NJIT (New Jersey Institute of Technology) transitioned to Division I play beginning in 2005-06.

In four years during the transition period to DI status, the Highlanders went 14-102, a brutal stretch that included a record 51-game losing streak. The program’s first season as an official DI team was 2009-10 when NJIT was part of the now-defunct Great West Conference.

It won 10 games that season and 15 the next, going 9-3 in conference play. The Highlanders won the Great West regular-season title in their fourth year in the league before two seasons as an independent.

Entry to the CollegeInsider.com

The second of those two independent campaigns helped to put NJIT on the college basketball map, as it first secured a huge upset by winning at nationally ranked Michigan and later gained an entry to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. The Highlanders made a run to the semifinals of the event with three wins before bowing out to Northern Arizona. The NCAAB odds sheet no longer treated them as a walkover.

The Highlanders moved to the Atlantic Sun the following season, scored an early-season win at St. John’s and again raced to the semifinals of the CollegeInsider.com tourney before bowing out.

That loss came against Columbia, which then plucked head coach Jim Ingles from NJIT, opening the door for Brian Kennedy to take over in Newark.

In his third season at the helm in 2018-19, Kennedy’s Highlanders won 22 games and scored another postseason victory in the College Basketball Invitational.

NJIT joined the America East following the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season and it has won six games in conference play in each of its first two years in the AEC. A senior-laden squad nearly scored another road win at St. John’s early last season and it won a double-overtime thriller at Lafayette shortly before opening 3-0 in league play.

The Highlanders faded down the stretch by losing their last four regular-season games and getting throttled 98-59 in the first round of the AEC tournament against Vermont. The NJIT Highlanders team stats reflected an offensively challenged unit that finished 339th in scoring (63.0), 348th in assists (10.1) and 337th in foul shooting (65.9%).
