North Florida Ospreys Basketball History
The North Florida Ospreys began to play in 1992-93 under coach Rich Zvosec as an NAIA independent. After going 7-20 in its first season, North Florida became an NCAA Division II school the following year, playing in the Sunshine State Conference until joining the Beach Belt Conference in 1997-98 with former NBA player Sydney Green taking over as head coach. Green stayed just two seasons before moving on to Florida Atlantic.
The Ospreys made the move to Division I for the 2005-06 season as members of the ASUN and began the NCAA four-year transition plan for schools moving up in class. The step up in competition was a rude awakening for North Florida, which went 20-96 in its first four seasons in Division I.
Things Start Looking Up
In 2009-10, Matthew Driscoll was brought in as the team’s coach and things began to improve, with the Ospreys going 16-16 in his third NCAA season. In 2014-15, the Ospreys won the ASUN conference title and tournament, earning its first trip to the NCAA Tournament. North Florida lost a First Four game to Robert Morris 81-77.
The Ospreys went 22-12 in 2015-16 and won the regular season conference title but were upset by Florida Gulf Coast in the conference tournament North Florida did receive an invitation to play in the NIT but lost to the Florida Gators in the opening round. It was the last postseason appearance for the Ospreys, who won the conference title in 2019-20 but lost in the conference tournament semifinals. COVID-19 prevented the Ospreys from competing in the postseason.
