The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks basketball team had a challenging 2021-2022 NCAAB season, finishing with a record of 5-23. Despite the disappointing win-loss record, there were some positives for the team, including a few standout players who had excellent seasons.
The Lumberjacks started the season with high hopes, but they struggled out of the gate, losing their first five games. They picked up their first win of the season in late November against Montana State, but they were unable to string together many wins after that.
One of the top performers for the Lumberjacks throughout the season was junior guard Cameron Shelton. Shelton led the team in scoring, averaging 17.8 points per game, and he was also a strong rebounder, pulling down 6.5 rebounds per game. Alabama Northern Arizona Lumberjacks Basketball History
Overall
The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks are a Division I program located in Flagstaff, Ariz. Northern Arizona competes in the Big Sky Conference and is coached by Shane Burcar.
Northern Arizona has made two trips to the NCAA Tournament. The most recent appearance came in 2000 under Mike Adras, when the Lumberjacks went 20-11, including 11-5 in conference, and won the Big Sky Tournament to secure an automatic bid. A No. 15 seed, they lost in the opening round to St. John’s, 61-56. The school’s other appearance came two years earlier with Ben Howland at the helm. They went 13-3 in league play to repeat as the regular season champion, before securing the Big Sky Tournament title. This time, also as a No. 15 seed, they fell in the first round of the NCAAs to Cincinnati, 65-62.
Northern Arizona has also appeared three times in the National Invitational Tournament, with first-round defeats in 1986, 1997 and 2006. The furthest the Lumberjacks have advanced in any event was in 2015, when they lost the CollegeInsider.com Tournament to Evansville, 71-65. To get there, they beat Grand Canyon, Sacramento State, Kent State and New Jersey Institute of Technology. Coached by Jack Murphy, they finished that season with a school-record 23 victories.
Burcar, a longtime successful high school coach in the Grand Canyon State, joined Murphy’s staff in 2018. The following season, when Murphy left to become an assistant at Arizona, Burcar replaced him on an interim basis. He then was named the permanent head coach after finishing 16-14 in 2020.
The last three seasons haven’t gone as swimmingly — the Lumberjacks went 6-16 in 2021, followed by 9-23 and 12-22 — but they did overcome odds to reach the Big Sky Tournament final in 2023. With a trip to the NCAA Tournament on the line, the ninth-seeded Lumberjacks lost to second-seeded Montana State, 85-78.
Before transitioning to Division I, Northern Arizona participated in four NAIA tournaments. Notably, the school beat Emporia State in a national third-place game in 1947.
