Northern Colorado Bears Basketball History

The Northern Colorado Bears are a Division I program located in Greeley, Colo. Northern Colorado, a member of the Big Sky Conference, is coached by Steve Smiley.

Northern Colorado is relatively new at this level, having transitioned from Division II in 2003-04. The Bears played their first two seasons as an independent and joined the Big Sky in 2006-07. They didn’t post their first winning record at Division I until 2009-10 under Tad Boyle when they went 25-8 to break the school record for wins in a season. The Bears debuted in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament, where they lost in the quarterfinals to Pacific.

Tad Boyle left following the season for Colorado, forcing the Bears to find a new head coach. They ended up looking internally to fill that vacancy, promoting assistant B.J. Hill to replace Boyle.

Initially, it looked like a great hire. Northern Colorado reached new heights in Hill’s first season, sweeping the Big Sky regular season and tournament championships to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the first time. The Bears wound up losing 68-50 to San Diego State in the round of 64 to finish 21-11.

The Bears’ success proved fleeting though, as their victories were later vacated due to numerous NCAA rules violations. Northern Colorado hasn’t been back to the Big Dance since, although it did overcome the odds to win the CIT in 2018 under Jeff Linder. The school defeated UIC 76-71 in the title game to finish 26-12.

Northern Colorado also reached the College Basketball Invitational semifinals in 2022, falling 80-64 to UNC Wilmington.

Smiley has been at the helm the last three seasons, compiling a 45-47 record. He was formerly an assistant under Linder, who left in 2020 to coach Wyoming.

Before jumping to Division I, Northern Colorado appeared in four Division II NCAA Tournaments. It went as far as the regional finals, losing in overtime to Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1989.
