Last-Season Standings
The Northern Kentucky Norse standings were exciting. Their season ended with a 20-14 overall record and a 12-6 record in conference play. They showed significant progress throughout the season, earning a spot in the Horizon League tournament.
With head coach Darrin Horn, the Norse had a solid defense, holding opponents to an average of just 69.3 points per game. Their offense was led by star guard Marques Warrick, who averaged 17.4 points per game, along with 4.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. Another standout player was forward David Böhm, who averaged 9.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.
The Norse started off the NCAAB season on a strong note, winning their first four games before facing a tough non-conference schedule that included games against Power Five teams like Michigan and Ohio State. Despite some close games, they struggled to come out with wins in those matchups.
In conference play, the Norse faced some tough competition, but they were able to hold their own against the top teams in the Horizon League. They had two wins over the eventual conference champion, Wright State, and they also defeated second-place Cleveland State twice.
The Norse entered the Horizon League tournament as the third seed and earned a first-round bye. They faced off against the Milwaukee Panthers in the quarterfinals and came away with a 71-63 victory. However, they fell to Wright State in the semifinals, ending their tournament run.

North Kentucky Basketball History
Beginning
The North Kentucky Norse are a relatively new program to the NCAA Division I men’s basketball. While this basketball team has been around since 1979, the Norse did not join D-I until the 2012-13 season. Prior to that, the Norse were a prolific Division II team.
The Norse made their name when it joined the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) in 1985. Ken Shields took over as coach in 1988 and North Kentucky became a powerhouse in the conference. The team had 12 20+ win seasons, six conference titles, and nine NCAA Division II Tournament appearances between the 1994-95 to 2011-12 seasons.
In 1995, the Norse made the D-II Sweet Sixteen and then finished as a runner-up in the next two tournaments. Had there been NCAAB odds for D-II games then, the Norse would have been one of the more lucrative teams to bet online on.
Debut in D-I
Thanks to their success in D-II, the Norse accepted an invitation from the Atlantic Sun Conference of NCAA Division I. This was their debut in D-I. They initially struggled for their four seasons.
John Brannen took over the program in 2015 and turned the team around beginning in 2016. Drew McDonald became the team’s star player as he led the North Kentucky Norse standings in points and rebounds for his stay. He still holds the franchise records for both stats as of the 2022-23 NCAAB season.
With his and Brannen’s efforts, the Norse qualified for the Division I NCAA Tournament for the first time in 2017. In 2019, the team returned to the NCAA Tournament and posted a 26-9 record to do it.
McDonald graduated and was named an All-American at the conclusion after the 2018-19 season. With his departure, Trevon Faulkner became the Norse team stats leader in scoring. But this has yet to return to March Madness though it has continued to play well under new coach Darrin Horn. It will just need to win the Horizon League tournament to qualify.
