Oklahoma Sooners Basketball History

Overall

The Sooners played their first season in 1908. From 1908-1980 the Sooners won their conference nine times and made the NCAA Tournament four times. The 40s were good for the Sooners. They won the conference five times. They didn’t make the tournament a single time from 1947 until 1979.

Billy Tubbs became head coach in 1980. His first two seasons at the helm were very forgettable. However, in 1982, the Sooners’ eventual all-time leading scorer Wayman Tisdale burst onto the scene. Tisdale is the most decorated player to ever attend Oklahoma. During his time with the Sooners, he was a three time all American, three time Big Eight Player of the Year, and leads the Sooners in career points. Tisdale helped lead the Sooners to multiple Big Eight Championships and multiple Tournament appearances. In the 1984-1985 the Sooners finished 31-6 overall and a 13-1 conference record. They went on to win the Big Eight and made it to the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament.

Additionally, they finished with 32 overall wins and made the National Championship. Unfortunately, they fell to Kansas in the National Championship. Tubbs’ last season was the 1993-1994 season and he finished his career at Oklahoma with a 333–132 overall record.

Griffin went on to be drafted 1st overall by the Los Angeles Clippers. After a couple of rough seasons, Capel was fired in 2011.

Lon Kruger was hired in 2011. After an underwhelming start in 2011. The Sooners went on to make the NCAA Tournament four seasons in a row from 2012-2013 through 2015-2016. The first three all resulted in first round exits. However, the Sooners made it to the Final Four round of the 2015-2016 NCAA Tournament. He coached multiple NBA players like Indiana Pacers guard Buddy Hield and Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young. Kruger retired after the 2020-2021 season. He finished his career at Oklahoma with a 195–128 overall record and a 90-89 conference record.
