The Oral Roberts Golden Eagles basketball team had a successful 2021-2022 season, finishing with a 22-11 overall record and a 12-6 record in conference play. The team’s strong performance earned them a spot in the NCAA Tournament as a 15th seed.

The Golden Eagles’ success was largely due to the outstanding play of their top players. Max Abmas was the team’s leading scorer, averaging 26.7 points per game and shooting 43.3% from the field. Kevin Obanor was another key player for the Golden Eagles, averaging 18.7 points and 9.6 rebounds per game.

Throughout the season, the Golden Eagles were ranked highly in several statistical categories, including scoring offense and three-point shooting. Their high-powered offense averaged 84.9 points per game, which ranked 8th in the nation. The team was also one of the best three-point shooting teams in the country, making 11.7 threes per game and shooting 39.5% from beyond the arc.

The Golden Eagles started the season strong, winning their first three games against Central Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Colorado State. They then suffered a tough loss to Creighton, but bounced back with wins over Missouri State, Kansas City, and Omaha.

As the season progressed, the Golden Eagles continued to dominate their conference opponents, winning key games against North Dakota State, South Dakota, and South Dakota State. They also picked up a huge win over Wichita State in non-conference play.

The Golden Eagles’ strong play earned them a spot in the Summit League tournament, where they defeated South Dakota State in the championship game to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. In the first round of the tournament, they faced second-seeded Ohio State and pulled off a stunning upset, winning 75-72. They then faced Florida in the second round, but ultimately fell short in a hard-fought 78-81 loss.

Despite their loss in the tournament, the Golden Eagles had a successful season and proved that they were a force to be reckoned with in college basketball. With many key players returning next season, the team is poised for continued success in the future.

Oral Roberts Golden Eagles Basketball History

Overall

The Oral Roberts Golden Eagles men’s basketball team lacks a long-standing tradition compared to other teams in the Summit League, but it has made up for the lost time by showcasing many successful years. Coach Ken Trickey was the program’s first head coach and guided the team to its debut NCAA Tournament appearance in just five seasons in 1974 as a non-major program compared to some other schools across the country.

The team did not disappoint as the Golden Eagles rode its fiery streak to the Elite 8, before losing to the Kansas Jayhawks in overtime. During his five year-year tenure, he would accumulate a record of 118–23.

The Golden Eagles experienced a short dry spell in reaching the dance but were still invited to participate in the NIT during that period. In the 1984 season, the team had its highest seeding ever (11th seed) but lost in the first round to Memphis State Tigers, despite unfavorable odds.

NCAA Tournament Appearance 22 Years Later

The team’s next NCAA tournament appearance came 22 years later, with two additional NIT invitations. The transition from the Midwestern Collegiate Conference to the Mid-Continent Conference was a challenging one, with competition becoming more fierce as time went on.

Failing to reach the NCAA Tournament in the 2005 season provided an opportunity for the team to reflect and learn from their mistakes. After a 20-year wait, the Golden Eagles finally made it to the NCAA Tournament the following year. Despite NCAAB injuries to key players, they tied for the Mid-Continent Conference title with IUPUI on the last day of the regular season.

Memphis, however, continued to have Oral Roberts’ number as the team made its way through the first round of the tournament. The team kept reaching the tournament until 2008, but faced first-round exits each time, overpowered by their opponents’ offensive and defensive strategies.

After the team’s last appearance in the postseason through the 2015 CBI, the school realized that the upcoming recruitment process would not be an easy one. As other schools within the Summit League were better positioned to succeed in the future, gaining underrated players became more difficult.

Max Abmas: From Zero to Hero

Max Abmas was a zero-star recruit that played his high school ball at the Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas. During his recruiting process, he would receive just four offers that included Oral Roberts and Marist.

The Marist Red Foxes have not made the NCAA Tournament since the 1987 season. Oral Roberts was able to win Max over with the coaching staff, and the goal was to bring the school back to its winning ways.

Three of them were from the armed forces, which required an obligation to serve after his collegiate playing career was over. His game has improved every year since he joined the school, and led the country in scoring, averaging 24.2 points per game, when the school made history in the 2021 season as a 15th-seed in the tournament.

Despite being seeded fourth in the Summit League tournament, the Golden Eagles topped North Dakota before beating top-seeded South Dakota State and North Dakota State in the semifinals. The Golden Eagles were overlooked in the first round against the Ohio State Buckeyes but were able to pull a major upset in overtime. It was the ninth time a 15th seed defeated a two-seeded team in the tournament’s history.

Their Cinderella run would continue by escaping with another close victory in the second round against the Florida Gators. The Oral Roberts team stats showed that smaller programs are overlooked in the tournament.

Unfortunately, their magical run came to an end in the Sweet 16 against the Arkansas Razorbacks. After Oral Roberts in-bounded the ball with a little over three seconds left, Abmas took the lost shot, but it hit the rim at the buzzer. Still, Oral Roberts exceeded expectations and achieved their goal of winning a few games in the tournament.

Head coach Paul Mills will be leading the Golden Eagles for his sixth season with the program. The team has started the season on a high note and is in arguably the best position to win the Summit League. Currently, Abmas is fourth in the nation in points per game this season. The team has good NCAAB odds to make it back to the Big Dance this season.
