Presbyterian Blue Hose Basketball History

Presbyterian’s first basketball season can be traced back to the 1913-14 season under coach Everett Booe. But as is frequently the case with smaller schools, there isn’t a whole lot of information available other than win-loss records from the early years. Up until the 1950s, none of the team’s first six coaches had a winning record.

The Blue Hose had a few good seasons in the 1950s but by the time 1960 rolled around it was back to the team’s losing ways. Finally, the 1980s were when things began to look up, as the team was 181-98 between the 1980-81 season and 1988-89. Gregg Nibert took over the program in 1989-90 and his fourth year led the Blue Hose to the South Atlantic Conference regular season title and a berth in the NAIA Tournament.

Nibert led Presbyterian to the NCAA Division II Tournament four times and the team was 3-4 in those games. He stayed with the program when they made the move to Division I for the 2007-08 season but even he couldn’t help the Blue Hose compete against the top-level college athletes. Nibert resigned following the 2016-17 season when the team went just 5-25. His coaching record after the move to Division I was 84-183.

Nibert was replaced by Dustin Kerns, who led Presbyterian to a 20-16 record in 2018-19 and a trip to the CIT, where the team went 2-1. That has been the team’s only winning season since becoming a Division I school. Kerns was lured away by Appalachian State and Quinton Ferrell replaced him for the 2019-20 season.
