Rhode Island Rams Basketball History
Overall
The Rhode Island Rams are a Division I program based in Kingston, R.I. Rhode Island is currently a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference and is coached by Archie Miller. Miller, in his first season with Rhode Island following a four-year stint at Indiana, will try to become the seventh coach to lead the Rams to the NCAA Tournament. Four of the previous six (Tom Penders, Al Skinner, Jim Harrick, Dan Hurley) managed to get past the first round.
The 1997-98 Rams, led by future NBA guards Tyson Wheeler and Cuttino Mobley, orchestrated the program’s deepest run, advancing to the Elite Eight. Wins over No. 9 seed Murray State, No. 1 seed Kansas, and No. 13 seed Valparaiso catapulted the Rams into the regional final, where they lost 79-77 to Stanford. Harrick and Co. returned to the tournament the next season but lost in the first round.
Rhode Island never was able to maintain that success, though it did turn in two of its better seasons under Hurley. In 2016-17, the Rams won 25 games, captured only their second A-10 Tournament title, and ended an 18-year NCAA Tournament drought. A No. 11 seed, the Rams overcame the NCAAB odds with a first-round upset of No. 6 Creighton. The following season, the Rams won 26 games and the conference regular season title before falling in the second round again.
When Hurley left for UConn following the season, assistant coach David Cox was promoted as his replacement. Cox lasted four seasons before he was fired without a postseason appearance.
The Rams’ first NCAA Tournament win came during a run to Sweet 16 in 1988. Victories over Missouri and Syracuse set the stage for a regional semifinal with Duke, in which the Penders-led Rams lost 73-72. They returned in 1993 and 1997 under Skinner. Rhode Island has also made the National Invitational Tournament 15 times, with a runner-up finish in 1946 and two other semifinal appearances (1945, 2010.) The school’s most recent appearance was in 2015.Notable alumni include Tom Garrick and two-time NBA champion and 2011 Sixth Man of the Year Lamar Odom.
