Richmond Spiders Basketball History
Overall
The Richmond Spiders are a Division I team based in Virginia. Richmond is currently a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference and is coached by Chris Mooney. The 50-year-old Mooney has been at the helm since 2005 and is the program’s winningest coach. He entered this season with 312 career victories, two A-10 Tournament titles, and three appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including a run to the Sweet 16 in 2011.
Richmond has been to the NCAA Tournament 10 times overall, starting in 1984 when it shocked Auburn. The Spiders, a mere 12-seed from the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, overcame 23 points and 17 rebounds from future NBA star Charles Barkley to win 72-71. Four years later, the Spiders beat the odds again by defeating defending national champion Indiana and Georgia Tech to advance to the Sweet 16 as a No. 13 seed. Continuing their knack for high-profile upsets, the Spiders became the first No. 15 seed to take down a No. 2 seed when they beat Syracuse in 1991. They also knocked off third-seeded South Carolina as a No. 14 seed in 1998.
In 2001, Richmond left the Colonial Athletic Association for the A-10. The Spiders have made the tournament four times since then, advancing twice to the Sweet 16 (2011 and 2022) under Mooney.The school’s postseason history also includes 10 trips to the National Invitational Tournament, where its combined record is 11-10, and three to the College Basketball Invitational.
Notably, the program has a small pipeline to the NBA. Twelve Spiders have been drafted, most recently Justin Harper in the 2011 second round (32nd overall) by Cleveland. Harper, whose rights were subsequently traded to Orlando, was an NBA D-League All-Star in 2016 and 2017 and has carved out a career playing overseas. Richmond was picked seventh in the 2022-23 A-10 preseason poll, behind All-Conference First-Team pick Tyler Burton.
