The Saint Joseph’s Hawks basketball team had a challenging season in 2021-2022, finishing with a record of 6-24 overall and 2-14 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. They finished in last place in the conference standings, missing out on the A-10 Tournament.

Despite the disappointing season, there were still some positive developments for the Hawks. They had some notable victories over teams such as George Washington and La Salle. These wins demonstrated that the team was capable of competing with some of the better teams in the conference.

One of the top players for Saint Joseph’s this season was junior guard Jordan Hall. Hall led the team in scoring, averaging 11.4 points per game. He also contributed 6.8 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game. Hall’s versatile game made him a consistent threat on both ends of the court.

The Hawks also received solid contributions from freshman guard Rahmir Moore and junior guard Cameron Brown. Moore averaged 8.2 points and 3.3 rebounds per game, while Brown contributed 7.7 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.

Overall, the Saint Joseph’s Hawks had a difficult season, but there were some positive developments for the team. Hall emerged as a promising young talent and Funk provided veteran leadership. With some additional support and improvements, the Hawks could be in a better position to compete in the Atlantic 10 Conference in the future.

Saint Joseph’s Hawks Basketball History

The St. Joseph’s Hawks are a Division I program based in Philadelphia. St. Joseph’s has been a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference since the 1982-83 season and has a rich history that includes 21 NCAA Tournament appearances and a trip to the Final Four.

St. Joseph’s deepest NCAA Tournament run came under future Hall of Fame coach Jack Ramsay in 1961, when the Hawks made the national semifinals. While their third-place finish was later vacated by the NCAA following an investigation into impermissible benefits with gambling, the Hawks remained a postseason fixture. The Hawks went to the tournament seven times during the 1960s, with six trips to the Sweet 16 and two to the Elite Eight.

The Hawks also made three tournament appearances during the 1970s following Ramsay’s departure before returning to the Elite Eight in 1981, where they lost to eventual national champion Indiana. Two years later, the Hawks joined the A-10.

St. Joseph’s has enjoyed plenty of success during its four-decade stint in the A-10, winning 23 regular season titles and six conference tournament titles. In 2003-04, the most illustrious season in school history, the Hawks went 27-0 during the regular season under Phil Martelli. Despite losing to Xavier in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament, the Hawks secured a No. 1 seed in the Big Dance. Led by the dynamic backcourt of Nelson and Delonte West, the Hawks beat No. 16 seed Liberty, eighth-seeded Texas Tech and fourth-seeded Wake Forest before falling in the Elite Eight to No. 2 seed Oklahoma State, 64-62. Nelson was named the National Player of the Year while Martelli was named National Coach of the Year.

Martelli, the winningest coach in program history, compiled a 444-328 record over 24 seasons and guided the Hawks to seven NCAA Tournament appearances. He was fired following a 14-19 finish in 2019. Billy Lange, a former Villanova associate head coach and Philadelphia 76ers assistant, replaced Martelli and has had three straight losing seasons. Because of that, the Hawks —ranked 13th in the A-10 preseason poll— entered the 2022-23 campaign facing long odds.St. Joseph’s postseason history also includes 16 National Invitational Tournament appearances, with runner-up finishes in 1996 and 2005.

Aside from Nelson and West, both first-round draft picks, the school’s pipeline to the NBA includes Mike Bantom, Cliff Anderson, Dwayne Jones and Langston Galloway, among others. DeAndre Bembry, taken 21st overall by the Atlanta Hawks in 2016, is St. Joseph’s most recent draft pick.Additionally, the Hawks have had 29 players drafted into the NBA, including Jameer Nelson, the program record-holder for career points and assists.
