Saint Mary’s Gaels Basketball History

The Saint Mary’s Gaels spent most of their existence being a little-known program. It was an independent school until 1952 when it joined California Basketball Association (CBA), which is now the West Coast Conference (WCC). In 1959, the Gaels broke through and qualified for the NCAA Tournament by winning the WCC. It finished in the Elite Eight.

But this NCAAB season would be a positive anomaly for a program that returned to being an also-ran. After James Weaver left in 1962, the Gaels become a losing program. Heck, the NCAAB odds likely had the Gaels as double-digit underdogs consistently.

After over two decades of futility, the Gaels began to turn a corner with Lynn Nance’s arrival. Saint Mary’s went 25-5 (12-2 in the conference) in 1988-89 and returned to the NCAA Tournament after a 30-year absence.

The success was short-lived as Nance left and the Gaels returned to being an afterthought in men’s basketball until the 1996-97 season. The Gael, in Ernie Kent’s final season, returned to the NCAA Tournament.

And in 2001, current head coach (as of 2022) Randy Bennett took over. The then-39-year-old transformed the program and made it respectable. In his fourth season, the Gaels returned to March Madness.

Under Bennett, the program’s all-time winningest coach, the Gaels consistently qualified for the NCAA Tournament and won several conference titles – both for the season and the tournament.

Bennett did so by recruiting international talent like Australian stars Patty Mills and Matthew Dellavedova. The duo would be featured in the Gaels teams of the late 2000s and early 2010s. Dellavedova is Saint Mary’s Gaels’ team stats leader in scoring. Both have their numbers retired.
