San Diego Aztecs Basketball History

The San Diego State Aztecs men’s basketball does not have an extensive history compared to the other teams in the Mountain West Conference, even though the first game in its history was played in the 1922 season. Back then, the school was known as the San Diego Normal School. Despite the absence, the school has made up for it by becoming one of the conference’s most successful programs.

It was their runs at the NAIA Tournament and Division II level, however, that laid the foundation for the program. In the NAIA Tournament, they would make it to the National Championship Game but lose twice in the 1939 and 1940 seasons. Despite this, they were able to get some redemption in 1941 when they raised the trophy against the Murray State Racers.

The team would make three appearances at the Division II level in 1957, 1967, and 1968. Every time they made an appearance, they would make their opportunities count, as it included a Regional Finals victory in 1968.

Making the transition to the Division I level has proven to be hard for many programs across the nation, due to the fact that, in the 1969-70 season, the Aztecs were considered a non-major school. Through many changes, the foundation of the program was slowly forming.

Coached by Tim Venzie and a member of the Pacific Coast Athletic Association, the men’s basketball team would punch their first tickets to the NCAA Tournament in 1975 and 1976. The result would be the same, since they lost in the first round.

Smokey Gaines would be the next coach to bring the program to the dance, but it ended in the opening round against the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels. Despite receiving a bid to the NIT in the next few years, the long NCAA drought would be in store for the program until Steve Fisher changed the culture after making the transition from the Western Athletic Conference to the Mountain West Conference.

However, searching for a tournament win was proven to be difficult until the 2011 season. Still, the Aztecs will be known for recruiting NBA star Kawhi Leonard to the program as he won two championships in the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs and the Toronto Raptors.

The men’s basketball team would go 34-3 in the 2011 regular season, and the NCAAB odds were great. The San Diego State standings showed that the spirits were high as they easily won their first matchup against the Northern Colorado Bears. The second-round battle was a tough win, since the team was able to run away with the win in two overtime against the Temple Owls. Unfortunately, the Connecticut Huskies ended their run in their first-ever Sweet 16 appearance.

Steve Fisher would make it in 2012 and 2013. In 2014, the team made one more Sweet 16 run before losing to the one-seeded Arizona Wildcats. Fisher remained with the team until the end of the 2016-2017 season, making a few more appearances in the NCAA tournament.

Brian Dutcher took over as the leader and has done quite a few things with the program. The Aztecs finished the 2019–20 season with a 30–2 record, the best winning percentage in team history. AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll both ranked the team in the top five for seven straight weeks, but the Tournament was canceled due to the global pandemic.

Dutcher is still searching for his first win at the dance with the team. Regardless of the situation, the San Diego Aztecs standings are great, they even have the best NCAAB odds to win the Mountain West Conference.
