The following season, the USC Upstate media guide shows the team playing in something called the Carolina League, where the team remained through the 1970-71 season. In 1971-72, the Spartans moved to the Palmetto Athletic Conference and became an NAIA member in 1974-75.
The transition to a four-year program wasn’t easy for USC Upstate in the beginning, as the team went 16-90 in its first four seasons. The program improved and went 18-13 in 1979-80. Jerry Waters took over as coach in 1980-81 and guided the team to a 22-12 record, the NAIA District Six championship and a berth in the NAIA National Tournament. The following year, the team did one better, capturing the 1982 NAIA National Tournament championship.
USC Upstate made the move to NCAA Division II for the 1990-91 season and won the Peach Belt Conference title in its first two seasons. Waters remained coach through the 1996-97 season and the Spartans never had a losing season with him on the bench, as he posted a 364-133 career record. Gary Nottingham led USC Upstate to the Peach Belt Conference title in 1997-98 but the team went just 4-23 his second year.
