Overview of the St. John’s Red Storm Standings

Last-Season Standings

The St. John’s Red Storm basketball team had an up-and-down NCAAB season in the 2021-2022 campaign, finishing with a 17-14 overall record and a 9-11 record in Big East play. Despite the mixed results, the team showed flashes of potential and played some of their best basketball against top competition.

The Red Storm started the season unranked but quickly made a statement with a 79-74 upset victory over then-No. 23 St. Bonaventure in their second game of the season. However, inconsistent play plagued the team throughout the year, with losses to teams like DePaul and Georgetown overshadowing quality wins against Seton Hall and Providence.

Despite the ups and downs, the Red Storm finished the regular season with a notable win over then-No. 14 Villanova, which propelled them to a seventh-place finish in the Big East standings. St. John’s Red Storm Standings improved significantly in the latter half of the season, showing promise for the future.

The team then made it to the quarterfinals of the Big East Tournament before falling to eventual champion UConn. St. John’s Red Storm Standings secured their spot in the tournament with a late-season surge that included big wins against quality opponents.

One bright spot for St. John’s was the emergence of sophomore guard Posh Alexander as a true star in the Big East. Alexander led the team in scoring with 16.4 points per game and was named to the All-Big East Second Team. He also led the conference in steals with 2.9 per game and was named the Big East Defensive Player of the Year.

Other key contributors for the Red Storm included junior guard Rasheem Dunn (10.9 points per game), senior forward Julian Champagnie (10.7 points per game), and freshman guard Aaron Wheeler (7.1 points per game).

Overall, while the Red Storm’s season was marked by inconsistency and missed opportunities, the team showed flashes of potential and played some of their best basketball against top competition. With Alexander leading the way, the future looks bright for the St. John’s basketball program and their St. John’s Red Storm Standings.

St. John’s Red Storm Basketball History

The arena where the St. John’s Red Storm play home games is called Carnesecca Arena. That name appears twice atop the court on which they bounce their basketballs. It’s only fitting, as perhaps no program in the country has a more defined connection with one man as St. John’s and “Looie.”

Long before Carnesecca took the helm, there were some golden years in the early portions of postseason basketball. Back when the NIT was the standard of March hoops, the team then known as the Redmen won that event in 1943 and 1944, as well as in 1959 and 1965, when it had taken a back seat to the NCAA Tournament.

All four of those NIT titles -as well as several trips to the NIT semifinals- were under the guidance of Joe Lapchick, a one-time original Boston Celtic who coached St. John’s from 1936-47 and again from 1956-65. Lapchick coached the New York Knicks in between those two stretches, leading them to seven straight winning seasons in the early part of their history in the NBA.

Frank McGuire took over for Lapchick after the latter’s first stint. McGuire’s first two teams were a combined 27-20, but his last three went 75-16. The 1951-52 edition, with five men who would eventually see action in the NBA, knocked off Kentucky and Illinois en route to the national title game before falling to Kansas.

McGuire left after that season to take the job at North Carolina, then an unheralded program that he would soon elevate to national prominence. After four lackluster seasons under Dusty DeStefano, Lapchick’s second stint with St. John’s began and the program’s odds improved.

The Redmen had winning records in each of his first six seasons, including a 21-8 mark in his last season (1964-65,) which culminated in that final NIT crown. That team went 5-6 down the stretch of the regular season before defeating Boston College, New Mexico, Army, and Villanova in the championship run at Madison Square Garden.

Carnesecca, who was an assistant under McGuire in 1958, was named the new head coach. Aside from a three-year stint in the ABA in the early-1970s, Carnesecca would be a fixture on the sidelines into the 1990s.

Two of his first four teams went to the Sweet 16 and -after his ABA stint- Carnesecca took five straight teams to the NCAA Tournament from 1976 through 1980, including an Elite Eight trip in 1979. The following season saw St. John’s join the Big East for its inaugural season, go 24-5 -tying Syracuse and Georgetown atop the conference standings- and establish a decade of excellence in Queens.

The 1981-82 version had two freshmen -Chris Mullin and Bill Wennington- who would help the team to a third-place finish in the Big East and one NCAA Tournament win. The same thing would happen the following season before a down year, which preceded the best season in program history.

With Mullin and Wennington, now seniors, and a crafty point guard from Brooklyn by the name of Mark Jackson, the Redmen won 31 games and took the Big East crown with a 15-1 mark. That team, which also featured star forward Walter Berry, was dominant on the offensive end. St. John’s team stats displayed an incredible 54.2% mark from the field.

Alas, the team’s inability to solve mighty Georgetown proved to be its downfall. The Redmen’s only Big East loss was to the Hoyas, the then defending national champions, and Georgetown knocked them off in the conference tourney finals, plus a third time in the Final Four.

Carnesecca won 31 games again the following season but never again got past the Elite Eight before retiring after the 1991-92 season. His team did win the 1989 NIT.

St. John’s has made just eight NCAA Tournaments in 30 years since, including three in the last 20. Mullin coached four seasons at his alma mater starting in 2015-16, and his team saw an improvement in record in each of his last three years, but he resigned after a personal loss.

The 2021-22 team struggled down the stretch and lost to Villanova in the Big East tournament, to finish 17-15. Those seeking betting tips for 2022-23 should know that NCAAB odds for a turnaround are good, however, with early projections having the Red Storm finishing fourth in the Big East.
