SFA Lumberjacks Team History
The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks are a Division I program from Nacogdoches, Texas. Stephen F. Austin joined the Western Athletic Conference in 2021 following three decades in the Southland Conference.
SFA has been to the NCAA Tournament five times. However, its appearances in 2015, 2016 and 2018 were vacated, along with its conference titles from those years, after ineligible athletes were improperly certified for competition from 2013-19.
Thus, 117 men’s basketball wins were removed from the books, including a first-round upset of No. 3 seed West Virginia in the 2016 NCAA Tournament. The 14th-seeded Lumberjacks nearly pulled off another surprise in the second round, before losing 76-75 to Notre Dame.
Program-Record 29 Wins
The Lumberjacks also overcame the odds in 2014, when they knocked off fifth-seeded VCU 77-75 in overtime in the round of 64. The next season, the Lumberjacks won a program-record 29 games, including their second of three straight Southland Tournament titles, but lost in the first round of the Big Dance to No. 5 seed Utah.
Following the 2015-16 campaign, Brad Underwood, the three-time Southland Coach of the Year, left for a job at Oklahoma State. He was replaced by Kyle Keller, an assistant from Texas A&M. Keller brought the Lumberjacks back to the NCAA Tournament in his second year.
SFA transitioned well to the WAC, going 22-10, including 14-4 in league play, to claim a share of the regular season title in 2021-22. The Lumberjacks, however, ended up having to settle for an appearance in the College Basketball Invitational after losing early in the WAC Tournament.
SFA’s postseason history also includes three appearances in the National Invitational Tournament (1987, 2008, 2013) and a trip to the 2017 CollegeInsider.com Tournament.
Notably, three former Lumberjacks have appeared in at least one NBA game: George Johnson, James Silas and Kevon Harris, the 2020 Southland Player of the Year.
