Overview of the Temple Owls Standings

Last-Season Standings

The Temple Owls basketball team had a challenging 2021-2022 season, finishing with a record of 7-22 overall and 2-16 in conference play. Despite their struggles, the Owls remained competitive throughout the season, battling against some of the toughest teams in the American Athletic Conference.

In terms of rankings, the Owls never cracked the AP Top 25 poll this season. However, they did receive some recognition in the KenPom rankings, finishing the season ranked 156th out of 357 Division I teams.

One of the bright spots for the Owls this season was the play of senior guard Khalif Battle. Battle led the team in scoring, averaging 14.2 points per game, and was also one of the team’s top rebounders, pulling down 4.6 rebounds per game. Junior forward J.P. Moorman II also had a strong season, averaging 12.2 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.

Despite the team’s struggles, there were some memorable moments throughout the season. One of the highlights came on December 18th, when the Owls knocked off the USC Trojans, who were ranked 18th in the nation at the time, by a score of 85-77. Khalif Battle led the way in that game, scoring 32 points and grabbing 7 rebounds.

Overall, the Temple Owls standings for the 2021-2022 season leave room for improvement, but there were certainly some positives to take away from the season. With Battle and Moorman both expected to return next season, there is reason to believe that the Owls can make strides and improve their record in the upcoming season.

Temple Owls Basketball History

Overall

Temple was an early power in NCAA Division I men’s basketball. It peaked in 1937-38 when it won the NIT Tournament, which still stands as its only national championship as of the 2022-23 season. The program also became more prominent beginning in the 1950s with head coach Harry Litwack.

The Owls made the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament in 1956 and 1958. Guy Rodgers led the Owls’ team stats and became one of many players to be drafted by the Philadelphia Warriors of the NBA.

In 1969, the Owls won another NIT Championship led by the likes of John Baum. The scrappy guard led the Temple Owls’ team stats namely in rebounding. By the 1973-74 season, Don Casey replaced Litwack as coach. The program continued to develop under him and then under John Chaney beginning in 1982.

From the 1976-77 to the 2001-02 seasons, Temple won 10 regular season conference titles and seven conference tournament championships. The Owls peaked during the 1986-87 and 1987-88 seasons where they lost a total of six games (64-6) and only one conference game (35-1).

Ranked Top NCAAB Program

They were ranked as the top NCAA basketball (NCAAB) program in 1987-88. Tim Perry won the A-10 Player of the Year Award in 1988 and was drafted by the Phoenix Suns seventh overall that year. However, the Owls would not make it past the Regional Final (Elite Eight) of the tournament.

The program remained competitive during the 1990s and even produced a notable collection of NBA talent like three-time NBA All-Star Eddie Jones and Sixth Man of the Year winner, Aaron McKie. The latter returned to Temple as an assistant coach in 2014. By the late 90s, the Owls made two more runs to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. Then in 2005, Chaney stepped down.

Under new coach Fran Dunphy, Temple remained a respectable program and won a few conference titles. But it did not make it past the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Regardless, Temple can be found as a decent-sized favorite on the NCAAB odds.

McKie was promoted and became the coach during the 2019-20 season as the program’s newest coach. However, Temple is not anywhere close to being the prolific team it was in years past and can be seen as a “rebuilding” program.
