Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Basketball FAQs

Why is the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi nicknamed the Islanders?

Corpus Christi will never be mistaken for Hawaii, but the campus is located on an island, which the school uses in promotional material. The school’s website states, “Discover the Island University, the only university in the nation located on its island, at the heart of the Texas Gulf Coast.” It only made sense to use the Islanders for the school’s nickname.

Has Texas A&M-Corpus Christi ever beaten a Southeastern Conference team?

It doesn’t happen often, but the Islanders have beaten SEC teams twice, going 2-19 against the conference. The most satisfying win came against ‘Big Brother’ Texas A&M in College Station on December 13th, 2003, and the Islanders knocked off Georgia in overtime in 2008.

What has been Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s highest-scoring game?

In 2001, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Belmont had a home-and-home series scheduled and Belmont won the first game in overtime 117-116, which tied the Islanders’ record for the most points ever scored in a game and was the most points the team ever allowed. The rematch was exciting, but not quite as high-scoring as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won 92-87 in overtime.
