Last-Season Standings

Texas Longhorns Basketball History
Overall
The Texas Longhorns standings are good and the team began playing basketball in 1906. Their first win came on March 10 against Baylor. The Longhorns enjoyed their first two undefeated seasons in 1914 and 1915. They won their first South Western Championship in 1917.
The Longhorns had just three losing seasons from 1918-1955. The streak included nine conference championships and three tournament appearances.
Thurman Hull became head coach in 1951. Outside of winning the SWC in 1954, the Longhorns average at best. Hull finished his five-year stint with a 60-58 overall record.
Marshall Hughes took over the head coaching job for the next three seasons. He’d lead the Longhorns to three straight losing seasons before being relieved of his duties.
Coach Harold Bradley
Harold Bradley was hired in 1959 and turned things back around almost immediately. In his first season at the helm, the Longhorns finished 11-3 in conference play and won the SWC again. Additionally, they made the tournament again. During Bradley’s eight-year stint, the Longhorns won three conference championships, made the tournament twice, and never finished with a record below .500. Bradley retired after the 1966–67 season. He finished with a 73–39 record at Texas.
Following Bradley’s departure, Leon Black became head coach. The Longhorns standings finished with a 31-41 combined record after his first three seasons. The Longhorns had just two winning seasons under Black. However, they made the tournament twice and won the SWC twice.
Abe Lemons coached the Longhorns from 1976-1982. In his second season, the Longhorns won 26 games and won the NIT tournament. In his second season, they won 21 games, won the SWC and made it to the second round of the tournament. His final three seasons were lackluster, and he was fired after the 1981-1982 season.
Bob Weltlich coached the Longhorns from ‘82-‘88. He led the Longhorns to just one winning season and one conference title. He was fired and left Texas with a 77–98 overall record.
Coach Tom Penders
Tom Penders arrived in 1988 and brought some much needed stability to the program. In his first season at the helm, the Longhorns finished with a 25-9 record. During his 10-year stint, the Longhorns made the tournament eight times while winning three SWC Championships. Additionally, the Longhorns finished with 20 wins seven times under Penders. In 1989-1990, they made it to the Elite Eight, where they fell to Arkansas. The Longhorns moved to the Big 12 after the 1995-1996 season. Penders had a combined 32-29 Big 12 record after two seasons. He resigned in 1998.
Rick Barnes coached the Longhorns from 1998-2015. The Longhorns were dominant under Branes. They finished with 20 wins in 15 of his 17 seasons as head coach. They made the tournament in every season with him at the helm. Additionally, they won the Big 12 three times. The 2006-2007 season was one of the best seasons in program history. Freshman Kevin Durant was the best player in college basketball. He averaged 26 points and 11 rebounds. Durant won National Player of the Year. Durant was drafted second overall to the Seattle SuperSonics in the 2007 NBA draft. The 2007-2008 season ended with the Longhorns getting 31 wins, which is the most in program history. They made it to the Elite Eight. The Longhorns were ultra-competitive but never got past the Elite Eight under Barnes. In 2010, the Longhorns were ranked first for the first time in program history. The fire was put out, as they finished the season 28-8 after starting 17-0. Barnes was let go in 2015. Barnes had a host of NBA talent on his teams including Avery Bradley, D. J. Augustin, Durant, and Myles Turner.
Shaka Smart was at the helm from 2015-2021. The Longhorns were solid and made the tournament three times during his six-year stint. Unfortunately, they never made it out of the first round of the tournament. However, in 2018-2019 the Longhorns won the NIT tournament. In 2020-2021 the Longhorns finished with an 11-6 conference record. They ran the table and won the Big 12 Tournament. Smart left Texas for Marquette.
Chris Beard has been at the helm since 2021. So far he has a 29-13 overall record at the helm.
