Team History
The UTSA Roadrunners are a Division I team based in Texas. UTSA — also known as the University of Texas at San Antonio — moved to Conference USA in 2013, following one season in the Western Athletic Conference.
UTSA is a relatively young program, having begun as a Division I independent in 1981. Because of that, the Roadrunners have been to the NCAA Tournament just four times, with their last appearance coming as a member of the Southland Conference. In 2011, under Brooks Thompson, the Roadrunners won the Southland Tournament title and, in doing so, earned an automatic bid to the Big Dance. As a No. 16 seed, they beat Alabama State in the First Four, then lost to top-seeded Ohio State. The Roadrunners also made the tournament in 1988, 1999, and 2004, losing each time in the opening round.
Their most recent postseason trip came in 2018, when they lost to Sam Houston State in the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. UTSA experienced most of its success in the Southland, where it resided from 1991-2012, winning two regular season titles and three conference tournament titles. The program spent the 2012-13 campaign in the WAC before joining C-USA.
Former NBA guard Steve Henson has coached the Roadrunners since 2016-17. He won C-USA Coach of the Year in his second season on the job, as the Roadrunners overcame the odds to return to the postseason for the first time in seven years. That season, the Roadrunners (20-15) hit the 20-win mark for just the seventh time in program history. To date, it represents the program’s biggest accomplishment since joining C-USA.
UTSA won another 17 games in 2019. The last few seasons, however, haven’t been as fruitful. The Roadrunners were picked last in the 2022-23 C-USA preseason poll.
