The Towson Tigers are a Division I team based in Baltimore County, Md. Under the watch of longtime coach Pat Skerry, Towson has become one of the most competitive programs in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Tigers have won at least 20 games in four of the last nine seasons, including the 2021-22 campaign in which they went 25-9 and captured a share of the conference regular season title.

Despite that success, NCAA tournament berths remain elusive for Skerry and Co. Towson hasn’t made the Big Dance since 1991 —the second of back-to-back appearances as a member of the East Coast Conference— under coach Terry Truax. Both those trips resulted in first-round knockouts, and, while the Tigers appeared destined to end that lengthy drought last March, it ultimately wasn’t meant to be. Delaware overcame long odds to beat them in the CAA Tournament semifinals, spoiling the Tigers’ bid to return to March Madness. Towson subsequently made the National Invitational Tournament, a mere consolation, and lost in the opening round to Wake Forest.

Before that, the Tigers last made the postseason in 2016, where they fell to Oakland in the quarterfinals of the Vegas 16 Tournament. They finished that season 20-13.

Coach Skerry’s 12th Season

Skerry entered this, his 12th season at the helm, with a record of 172-173, including 98-92 in conference play. With multiple starters returning, expectations surrounding the program are arguably the highest since Skerry took over. The Tigers were tabbed a heavy favorite to win the CAA, collecting 12 first-place votes in the preseason poll. They also placed three players on the league’s preseason First Team: Nicolas Timberlake, Charles Thompson, and Cam Holden.

It’s a far cry from the program he took over a decade-plus ago. The Tigers went 1-31 in 2011-2012, with their lone win snapping an NCAA-record 41-game losing streak. The next season, Towson completed an unprecedented turnaround by finishing 18-13. Despite markedly improving, the Tigers were ineligible for postseason play because of NCAA Academic Progress Rate standards.
