Last-Season Standings
The UCF Knights basketball team had a solid 2021-2022 season, finishing with a 14-16 overall record and a 6-12 record in the American Athletic Conference. The Knights’ season was highlighted by several key victories, including a win over in-state rival USF and a thrilling double-overtime victory over conference foe Tulane.
Despite some ups and downs throughout the season, the Knights had several standout players who helped lead the team. Isaiah Adams was a force on both ends of the court, averaging a team-high 17.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Darius Perry was also a key contributor, averaging 14.7 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game.
The Knights’ performance earned them a spot in the AAC tournament, where they faced off against the Cincinnati Bearcats in the first round. Despite a valiant effort, the Knights fell to the Bearcats by a score of 70-61, ending their season.
Overall, the Knights showed significant progress throughout the season and demonstrated that they can compete with some of the top teams in the AAC. UCF Knights Basketball History
Overall
The University of Central Florida (UCF) Knights began as a Division II basketball team under Torchy Clark. As a DII program, UCF was prolific and made several deep runs in the Division II Tournament from 1975-76 to the 1981-1982 season.
However, after Clark stepped down, UCF fell into difficult times. This just happened to be when the program was promoted to Division I. From 1984 to 1993, the Knights were a losing team. Bettors likely faded them every night on the NCAAB odds. The three coaches that replaced Clark combined for a 34.7 winning rate (96-180).
But hope sprung anew for the Knights as Kirk Speraw, an assistant coach from Florida, took over as the new head coach. He instantly made UCF a respectable program and the team had its first winning season and NCAA Tournament appearance during his first season: 1993-94.
The Knights made return trips to the NCAA Tournament and even qualified in 1995-96 despite having an 11-19 record, the worst in the tournament. With Speraw, UCF also won the Atlantic Sun Conference (ASC) during the regular season three times and once in the tournament.
Moving to the Conference USA made it tougher for UCF as their run at making the NCAA Tournament abruptly stopped. This was even with the efforts of Jermaine Taylor, who led the Knights’ team stats in scoring and was drafted into the NBA.
In 2016, Johnny Dawkins took over the program. Like Speraw in the 1990s, UCF had a resurgence and became a winning team again. This culminated with their first win in March Madness in 2019. Led by 7’6” Tacko Fall, who led the UCF Knights’ team stats, the sizable underdogs nearly upset Duke in the second round. While UCF has yet to recapture this magical season, this program’s stock has gone up under Dawkins.
