UCLA Bruins Basketball History
The UCLA Bruins men’s basketball team started in the 1919-20 season. There have been mostly great years for the Bruins since they were founded, with a few blemishes here and there.
In 1919, Fred Cozens became the first head coach of the UCLA basketball and football teams, while working as a full-time lawyer. Despite showcasing his knowledge and having a decent record, the program was far from reaching its potential when Wilbur Johns took over for most of the 1940s as a member of the Pacific Coast Conference.
During the John Wooden era (1948-1975), it would be hard to point out the best year, since the school spent time in the PCC, Athletic Association of Western Universities, and Pac-8. During this period, odds were the greatest since, under his tenure, the Bruins men’s basketball team would win ten NCAA championships in a 12-year span.
Due to his major success, Wooden was dubbed the “Wizard of Westwood.” Within this period, his teams won 88 consecutive games, shattering the previous record of only two consecutive titles. To this day, this feat would be difficult to achieve again, as no other team has ever won more than two consecutive titles.
Wooden led the Bruins to their first undefeated PCC title in 1955–56 and a 17-game winning streak that ended only in the 1956 NCAA Tournament against the University of San Francisco, since NBA Hall of Famer Bill Russell was too much to handle.
During this span, the PCC would be disbanded, and UCLA’s athletic program was found out to have a few issues up its sleeve, since the football team was making illegal payments. In 1967-68, UCLA took its 47-game winning streak to Houston but lost in a close game.
Overall, Wooden was able to accumulate 620 during his 27-year tenure, which is pretty cemented in the record books. It would be hard to imagine if anyone could come close to that record at UCLA.
The only blemish during 1975-88 would take place under coach Larry Brown. In the 1980 Tournament, UCLA would fall to the Louisville Cardinals by a margin of just five points in the National Championship Game.
Their runner-up finish was vacated by the league because UCLA had two ineligible players on the roster. Under the Jim Harrick era, the school would secure its eleventh national title in 1975 with a 32-1 record. However, his tenure was cut short due to lying about who attended a recruitment dinner before the 1996 season.
The next leader of the program would be Steve Lavin. During his tenure, the Bruins remained a powerhouse at the collegiate level for the majority of his tenure until things took a 180 down south, as the mighty have taken a step back. In March 2003, Lavin was fired due to the program dealing with its first losing season in 55 years.
Ben Howland would leave the Pittsburgh Panthers to pursue a job with the Bruins. To name a few, Howland would recruit players like Russell Westbrook, Arron Afflalo, Kevin Love, Darren Collison, and other top recruits during his tenure. After the 2008 season, the once-deemed empire collapsed when he was let go after losing to the Minnesota Gophers (11th seed) in the opening round.
Steve Alford’s tenure was a rocky one, to say the least. Teams accomplished things, but not at the level the school was used to. There would be a controversy with a shoplifting case involving a few players in China. During this decade, the Bruins would miss out on a Final Four appearance since the 1950s.
The Mick Cronin era has gone off to a solid start, as he was introduced to the program in 2019. As an 11th seed, the Bruins would make it to the Final Four. The UCLA Bruins team stats defied all odds, achieving achieve upset after upset until they met the Gonzaga Bulldogs.
In 2022, the Bruins escaped a major upset against Kent State in the opening round. UCLA would fall to the eventual runner-up, the North Carolina Tar Heels. The Bruins have a solid chance to make some noise this season with their solid NCAAB odds.
