Overview of the UMBC Retrievers Standings

Last-Season Standings

The UMBC Retrievers men’s basketball team had an up-and-down NCAAB season in 2021-2022, reflected in their final UMBC Retrievers Standings. They finished the regular season with a 16-12 record, which earned them the fifth seed in the America East Conference Tournament. Despite a loss to the top-seeded Vermont Catamounts in the semifinals, the Retrievers’ solid regular season performance earned them a spot in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT).

In the CIT, the Retrievers continued to make their mark. They won their first-round matchup against the Rider Broncs by a comfortable margin of 81-64, showcasing their talent and grit on the court. This victory propelled them to the quarterfinals of the tournament, where they faced a tough opponent in the Bowling Green Falcons. Despite putting up a good fight, the Retrievers ultimately lost to the Falcons, bringing an end to their season and finalizing their UMBC Retrievers Standings.

One of the standout players for the UMBC Retrievers in the 2021-2022 season was senior guard R.J. Eytle-Rock. He was a consistent force on the court, averaging 14.3 points per game and earning a spot on the America East All-Conference Second Team. Eytle-Rock’s leadership and playmaking abilities were instrumental in the Retrievers’ success throughout the season, and he will be missed next year as he graduates. However, the Retrievers have a talented roster that includes several rising stars, such as sophomore forward Brandon Horvath, who averaged 14.6 points per game and earned a spot on the America East All-Conference First Team. With these young players stepping up and continuing to improve, the UMBC Retrievers have a bright future ahead of them, and the potential to improve their UMBC Retrievers Standings in the seasons to come.

While they may not have achieved their ultimate goal of winning the America East Conference championship, the Retrievers can be proud of their overall performance in the 2021-2022 season. They finished with a winning record and a postseason appearance in the CIT, demonstrating their resilience and determination. With a solid foundation of talent and coaching, the UMBC Retrievers are poised to continue their upward trajectory in the seasons to come, and improve their UMBC Retrievers Standings in the future.

UMBC Retrievers Basketball History

It’s impossible to start a discussion about UMBC men’s basketball and not open with one particular game. It took place on March 16, 2018, when the Retrievers made NCAA history by becoming the first (and still only) 16 seed to defeat a No. 1 seed in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament with a 75-54 victory over Virginia.

Defying the NCAAB odds, UMBC steamrolled the nation’s top defensive squad with 53 second-half points (the Cavaliers gave up an average of 54.0 per game for the season) in a runaway triumph that shocked the nation. Jairus Lyles, the second-leading scorer in program history, led the way with 28 points on 9 of 11 shooting for a Retrievers bunch that shot 54.2% from the floor.

The UMBC Retrievers team stats also showed a 12-for-24 effort from the arc and a 31-21 advantage on the glass in what most consider the greatest upset in college basketball history.

Long before that memorable night in Charlotte, UMBC got its Division I start as an independent in 1986. After two seasons in the now-defunct East Coast Conference, they had a six-season run in the Big South, finishing .500 or below overall each time.

Immediate Impact in the League

After moving to the Northeast Conference for the 1998-99 season, the Retrievers made an immediate impact in the league by winning the NCAAB regular-season title with a 17-3 conference record.

The program’s first 20-win campaign at the Division I level came three seasons later in 2001-02, but again it was knocked off in the semifinals of the conference tournament.

Two seasons later, UMBC joined the America East and in 2007-08, under head coach Randy Monroe, made it to the NCAA Tournament for the first time before losing to regional foe Georgetown in the first round.

Beginning in 2009-10, the program endured seven straight seasons with fewer than 10 victories, going 25-87 in AEC play during that span. Ryan Odom, son of one-time Wake Forest head coach Dave Odom, took over in 2016-17 and authored an immediate turnaround with three straight 20-win campaigns, including a 25-victory season that included the upset of the century.

Odom left to coach Utah State before the 2021-22 season. The Retrievers didn’t miss a beat, however, going 18-14 under Jim Ferry and reaching the championship game of the AEC tournament last March before a lopsided loss to Vermont.

UMBC Retrievers NCAAB FAQs

What is the highest win total in program history?

The team that knocked off Virginia secured a school-record 25 wins with the massive upset.

What was the worst season in program history?

Since becoming a Division I program, the Retrievers have had several single-digit wins campaigns. They went exactly 4-26 three times in five years soon after joining the AEC, but the 2014-15 team had the worst conference mark (2-14) in that stretch.

That squad scored 39 points in a first-round loss to Vermont in the conference tourney.

Who is the greatest player in program history?

Jarius Lyles played sparingly at VCU as a freshman before transferring to UMBC and sitting out a year. He then put together three incredible seasons, averaging 20.4 points per game as a Retriever. He won’t ever pay for a drink in Baltimore after his phenomenal effort against Virginia in the NCAAs (28 points on 9-for-11 shooting).
