UNC Asheville Bulldogs Basketball History
Overall
UNC Asheville began play in 1964-65 under coach Bob Hartman, who would remain the team’s coach through the 1978-79 season. The Bulldogs advanced to the NAIA National Tournament in their fifth season and returned two years later in 1971. Jerry Green took over the Bulldogs after Hartman left and was at the helm when UNC Asheville made the jump to Division I for the 1986-87 season as members of the Big South.
UNC Asheville didn’t have too much trouble fitting in the conference, winning the Big South Conference tournament in 1989, although the winner didn’t receive an automatic invitation to the NCAA Tournament until 1991. The Bulldogs had a couple of good teams in 1997 and 1998 that cruised to the regular season title but came up short in the conference tournament.
UNC Asheville didn’t have its best team in 2002-03, with the Bulldogs going 7-7 in Big South play but the team did win the conference tournament, sending it to the NCAA Tournament for the first time. The Bulldogs defeated Texas Southern in overtime in a play-in game but lost to No. 1 seed Texas. UNC Asheville returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2011 and once again won its play-in game in overtime before losing to No. 1 seed Pittsburgh.
The Bulldogs also advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2012 and 2016, losing in the first round both times. UNC Asheville also played in the NIT in 2008 and 2018, along with the CIT in 2017 and the CBI in 2022. Their Division I postseason record is 3-8, although four of those losses have come against No. 1 or No. 2 seeds in the NCAA Tournament.
