Utah Valley Wolverines Team History
The Utah Valley Wolverines are a Division I program located in Orem, Utah. Utah Valley currently competes in the Western Athletic Conference and is coached by former NBA player Mark Madsen. The school — formerly known as Utah Valley State — competed as a junior college until 2003, when the six-year NCAA transitional period began. During that time, the Wolverines weren’t eligible for the postseason or the NCAA record book.
In retrospect, it was a relatively large leap, as most schools that jump to Division I do so by gradually climbing the ranks (think Division II or III). But Utah Valley overcame the odds by successfully managing the transition. The Wolverines joined the Great West Conference in 2008, then won their first of two straight conference titles in 2010-11 under Dick Hunsaker.
Trip to the NIT
The Wolverines made their postseason debut in the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Tournament, losing in the first round to Weber State. Utah Valley took another big step in 2013-14, when it joined the WAC. Impressively, the Wolverines won the league that same season, and in doing so, earned a trip to the NIT. The Wolverines wound up losing in the first round to California to finish 20-12.
The Wolverines have posted five 20-win seasons since completing the transitional period, including a program-record 25 wins in 2018-19 under Mark Pope. Following that season, in which the Wolverines reached the College Basketball Invitational quarterfinals, Pope left to coach BYU. He was replaced by Madsen, who had been an assistant with the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers since 2013.
In Madsen’s second season at the helm, the Wolverines claimed a share of the WAC title for the first time since 2014. They finished 9-4 in WAC play and 11-11 overall.
Utah Valley was picked to finish seventh in the 2022-23 WAC preseason coaches’ poll and eighth in the media poll.
