Overview of the Winthrop Eagles Standings

Last-Season Standings

The Winthrop Eagles basketball team had an impressive 2021-2022 season, finishing with a record of 25-9 overall and 15-3 in conference play. This record was good enough for them to win the Big South regular-season championship and earn a spot in the NCAA tournament.

The Eagles played with a high tempo, averaging 78.1 points per game, and had a strong defense that allowed only 67.9 points per game. They also led the conference in rebounding, pulling down 39.3 boards per game.

The team was led by senior guard Chandler Vaudrin, who averaged 12.2 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 6.6 assists per game, and was named the Big South Conference Player of the Year. Senior forward Adonis Arms was also a key contributor, averaging 12.6 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.

The Eagles faced some tough competition in non-conference play, including losses to NC State, Coastal Carolina, and Davidson, but they picked up some impressive wins as well, including victories over East Carolina, Georgia State, and High Point.

In conference play, Winthrop dominated, winning their first 12 games before suffering their first conference loss to UNC Asheville. They bounced back from that loss and finished the regular season on a three-game winning streak, securing the top seed in the Big South tournament.

In the tournament, the Eagles advanced to the championship game, where they faced Campbell. Winthrop came out on top, winning 80-53 and earning an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

Despite a strong regular season and conference tournament performance, the Eagles were unable to advance past the first round of the NCAA tournament, falling to Villanova by a score of 73-63.

Overall, the Winthrop Eagles had a successful season, and their strong performance earned them a spot in the AP Top 25 rankings for the first time since 2010. They finished the season ranked 23rd in the country and will look to build on their success in the coming seasons. The Winthrop Eagles standings in the Big South Conference and overall were impressive, and they will likely be a team to watch in the future.

Before Betting on Winthrop Eagles, Check Out These Tips:

Check their injury report:

Injuries can have a big impact on a team’s performance, so be sure to check the Winthrop Eagles’ injury report before placing a bet. If a key player is out, it could significantly impact their chances of winning.

Look at their recent performances:

Before placing a bet on the Winthrop Eagles, it’s important to check their recent performances. Look at their last few games and see how they have been playing. Are they on a winning streak or have they been struggling lately?

Look at their home and away records:

Some teams perform better at home than they do on the road, while others are better on the road. Check the Winthrop Eagles’ home and away record to see if there is a pattern. This can help you make a more informed bet.

Analyze their opponents:

Another important factor to consider is the quality of their opponents. If the Winthrop Eagles have been playing against weaker teams, their performance may not be a good indicator of their true ability. However, if they have been winning against strong teams, it could be a sign that they are a good bet.

Winthrop Eagles Basketball History

The Winthrop Eagles didn’t begin to play until the 1978-79 season as an NAIA team. Winthrop was strong right from the start, posting a 25-10 record in its first year and going 3-1 in the NAIA District 6 Playoffs. The Eagles advanced to the NAIA District 6 Playoffs the next two seasons but failed to make it in 1981-82 despite a 21-12 record.

Winthrop moved up to Division I and joined the Big South Conference for the 1985-86 season and won the conference tournament in 1987-88 after going just 5-7 in Big South Conference play. The Eagles had some down years in the early 90s but things changed when Gregg Marshall took over the program in 1998-99.

Marshall inherited a program that went just 7-20 the previous season and led them to a 21-8 record and the Big South Conference championship and a win in the conference tournament to send the team to its first NCAA Tournament. Winthrop made the NCAA tournament in each of Marshall’s first four seasons. Following a two-year absence, the Eagles returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2005-2007, winning their first Tournament game in 2007 when Winthrop knocked off Notre Dame. Marshall was lured away by Wichita State after that and he had a successful career with the Shockers.

Winthrop returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2008 and 2010 under coach Randy Peele. Pat Kelsey led Winthrop to the NCAA Tournament in 2017 and 2021. Kelsey left for the College of Charleston after the 2020-21 season and was replaced by Mark Prosser.
