Akron Zips – NCAAF History
Day One of the Ohio Akron Zips
The Akron Zips are a Division 1 FBS Football team based in Akron, Ohio. Originally named Buchtel College upon opening in 1891, the program was renamed the University of Akron in 1913. The nickname “Zips” is short for Zippers, which is a reference to the rubber boots manufactured by the B.F. Goodrich Company, which was headquartered in Akron at the time. Akron has an overall record of 521–548–37.
Upset Leads to Conference Championship – To Lose
After spending the 1970s and 1980s as a Division II and Division 1-AA (now known as Division 1 FCS) program, respectively, Akron became the first program to move up from Division 1-AA to Division I, in 1987. The Akron Zips’ most successful season came in 2005. Despite a 6-6 record, the Zips clinched their first-ever Mid-American East Division title, setting up a showdown versus heavily favored Northern Illinois. Akron pulled off a 31-30 upset in Detroit to clinch their first-ever Conference Championship. The Zips would also make their first-ever bowl game appearance, losing 38-31 to Memphis in the Motor City Bowl – ironically enough in the same stadium where they won the MAC title weeks prior. Akron would go on to make two more bowl game appearances, with their lone victory coming in the 2015 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl over Utah State.
