The Sun Devils went on to play in their first bowl game in 1939 under head coach Dixie Howell. Dixie led the Sun Devils to a 23-15-4 overall during his four-year tenure.
The Red Devils didn’t enjoy much success during the 30s and 40s. In 1949, they returned to a bowl game for the first time in 10 seasons. They played and lost in the Salad Bowl in both 1949 and 1950 under head coach Edward Doherty.

Frank Kush was hired in 1958 and would remain at the helm until through the 60s and 70s. Kush led the Sun Devils to 19 winning seasons, including five double-digit win seasons and two undefeated seasons. Kush quickly built a reputation as one of the toughest coaches in the country. His practices took place in the desert heat and he ran drills like “Bull in the Ring” to test a player’s toughness. He led the Sun Devils to a 10-1 overall and a 6-0 conference record in the 1959 season. The 60s were solid for the Sun Devils as they put up a winning season in each season.
