Baylor Bears – NCAAF History
Team History
The Baylor Bears are a Division I FBS Football team based in Waco, Texas. Initially founded in 1899, Baylor has an overall record of 622–590–44. Other than a ban year in 1906 -because of the increased violence in football- and two seasons during World War II, Baylor has seen a wide variety of results over its program’s history, which includes many historic rivalries with other schools in the state of Texas. The Bears won four Southwest Conference championships in 1915, 1916, 1922 and 1924. Baylor nearly won another Southwest Conference title later in 1956, but finished third behind Texas A&M and TCU. The 9-2 record earned them a berth in the Sugar Bowl, where they upset second-ranked Tennessee in a 13-7 thriller on New Year’s Day of 1957.
After a couple of decades with moderate success, Baylor continued to flourish for the next two decades with Grant Teaff at the helm. The Bears won the Southwest Conference in 1974 and in 1980, making eight bowl appearances over this span under Teaff, who retired in 1992.
Reaching New Heights
In 2010, Head Coach Art Briles turned around the program and took Baylor to new heights, first leading the team to their first-bowl berth since 1995, then the next season, with star quarterback Robert Griffin III, the Bears went 9-3 and beat University of Washington 60-56 in a classic Alamo Bowl showdown to cap off the season. Griffin, known by his “RG3” nickname, won the Heisman Trophy, becoming the first player in Baylor program history to earn the distinguished honor. In 2013, Baylor went 11-1 on the season, winning the Big 12 Conference and clinching their first-ever berth in the now-defunct Bowl Championship Series, losing 52-42 to Central Florida in the Fiesta Bowl. Under Briles, Baylor reached six straight bowl game appearances, but after some violations and revelations of sexual assault charges by players over the years, Briles was dismissed before the 2017 season.
Baylor won the 2021 Big 12 Championship with a 12-2 record under current coach Dave Aranda, finishing the year with a 21-7 win over Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl. Baylor has made 26 bowl game appearances in program history, with an overall record of 14-12.
