Cincinnati Bearcats Football History

Team History

The Cincinnati Bearcats began playing football in 1885. The period of 1949-1954 is one of the best stretches in Bearcat football history. Under coach Sid Gilman, the Bearcats won three conference championships and appeared in multiple bowl games. In 1957, the Bearcats joined the Missouri Valley Conference.

Outside of winning the MVC, the Bearcats were rather quiet in 1963 and 1964. In 1968, the Bearcats had two amazing players in Quarterback Greg Cook and kicker Jim O’Brien. They both went on to the NFL to have good rookie campaigns.

The Bearcats had a host of coaches post winning records and then leave for bigger programs including coach Tony Mason. He was at the helm from 1973-1976 before leaving for the University of Arizona.

Coach Minter in the 90s

The 80s were mostly a struggle for the Bearcats. At one point they went down to Division I-AA because attendance was so low. Tim Murphy was hired in 1989. The Bearcats had four straight losing seasons, but in 1993, he led the Bearcats to an 8-3 record. Unfortunately, at the end of the season, he was hired at the University of Harvard and is still there to this day.

In 1994, the Bearcats hired Rock Minter. In 1996, they joined the Conference USA. Minter helped the Bearcats back on the right track before being fired in 2003. They appeared in four bowl games and had six winning seasons during his time.

Next up was Mark Dantonio. He only coached three years before departing for Michigan State, but he helped put the Bearcats in a good position moving forward. They reached two bowl games and posted winning records in two of his three seasons.

Switch to the Big East

The Bearcats would switch to the Big East in 2005. Afterwards, Brian Kelly was hired in 2006 and had perhaps the greatest stretch in Bearcats’ history. The Bearcats were 34-6 under Kelly in college football regular season play and 17-4 in conference play.

They won the Big East twice and went to a bowl game in each of his four seasons. Additionally, Kelly won the Big East Coach of the Year award. In 2009, the Bearcats went 12-0 and were ranked the third overall team in the BCS. This ranking clinched them a berth in the Sugar Bowl against Florida. Kelly was named head coach at Notre Dame soon after.

The Bearcats’ next two coaches were Butch Jones and Tommy Tuberville. Both brought plenty of success to the Bearcats program. Jones led the Bearcats to a 23-14 record during his tenure. The Bearcats tied for first place in the Big East in each of his seasons and appeared in two bowl games before accepting the head coaching job at the University of Tennessee.

Tuberville picked up right where Jones left off. In 2013, the Bearcats joined the American Athletic Conference. The Bearcats started off hot under Tuberville with three straight winning seasons. In his final season, the Bearcats went 4-8 and he resigned.

Luke Fickell has been head coach since 2017. The Bearcats are 56-17 under Fickell including two AAC championships. The Bearcats have multiple double digit win seasons, two bowl wins, and appeared in the college football playoffs for the first time in January 2022.

Additionally, the Bearcats had a host of players get drafted in 2022 including Seattle Seahawks Coby Bryant, the Atlanta Falcons’ Desmond Ridder, the New York Jets’ Sauce Gardner, and many more.
