Team History

The Georgia State Panthers fielded their first team and played their first game in 2010 under legendary coach Bill Curry. The Panthers’ inaugural season ended with a 6-5 record. They won their first game 41-7 against Shorter University. Both 2011 and 2012 ended with losing records.

In 2013, they officially joined the Sun Belt Conference under coach Trent Miles. The move from the FCS to FBS proved to be tough for the Panthers. The Panthers won just one game in their first two seasons in the Sun Belt. In 2015, the Panthers showed signs of life as they finished 6-7 overall and 5-3 in conference play. Additionally, they clinched their first bowl game. They played San Jose State in the AutoNation Cure Bowl. They went on to lose the game 27-16. In 2016, things went back downhill and Miles was fired after a 2-8 start to the season.

Former South Carolina offensive line coach Shawn Elliott has been head coach at Georgia State since 2017. The Panthers hit the ground running with Elliot at the helm. In his first season, they finished with a 7-5 record and captured their first bowl win after beating Western Kentucky 27-17 in the AutoNation Cure Bowl. The Panthers have finished with a winning record in four of Elliot’s six seasons. They’ve appeared in four bowl games and have won three.
