Pittsburgh Panthers Football History
The Pittsburgh Panthers are a Division I team located in Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh joined the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2013, following a two-decade stint in the Big East.
Pittsburgh has won five NCAA titles, the last in 1976. Led by Heisman Trophy-winning running back Tony Dorsett, the Panthers went 12-0 and beat Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, capping the school’s first unbeaten season since 1937. They were voted No. 1 in both the final Associated Press and Coaches’ polls.
Following the season, Johnny Majors returned to his alma mater, Tennessee, to coach. Majors was replaced at Pittsburgh by Jackie Sherrill.
Pittsburgh’s other national titles came in 1910, 1916, 1918 and 1937.
The Panthers have been to 37 bowl games, most recently the 2022 Sun Bowl, in which they outlasted UCLA 37-35 under Pat Narduzzi. It was the school’s second straight bowl appearance and the 13th in 15 years.
Narduzzi has coached the Panthers for eight seasons, compiling a record of 62-41. He’s the second-winningest coach in program history, trailing College Football Hall of Famer Jock Sutherland. Narduzzi guided the school to its third conference title — and first in the ACC — in 2021. The Panthers won 11 games but lost to Michigan State, 31-21, in the Peach Bowl.
Quarterbacking that team was ACC Offensive Player of the Year Kenny Pickett, who threw 42 touchdown passes and finished his career as the school’s all-time leading passer (12,303 career yards). Pickett, who also won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award as the nation’s top upperclassmen quarterback, was selected 20th overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Pickett is arguably the most renowned quarterback to come out of Pittsburgh since Hall of Famer Dan Marino, who played with the Panthers from 1979-82. The Panthers went 42-6 during that time, with three bowl victories. Marino and Pickett became the second and third Pittsburgh quarterbacks to receive Heisman votes, following Matt Cavanaugh in 1977.
The school retired Marino’s number, along with those of Larry Fitzgerald, Dorsett, Marshall Goldberg, Joe Schmidt, Mark May, Jimbo Covert, Bill Fralic, Mike Ditka, and Hugh Green.
Notably, Pittsburgh won Big East titles in both 2004 and 2010.
