Team History
In 2007, a board of trustees for the University of South Alabama voted in Favor of giving the University a football team. Former UAB head coach Joey Jones became the first head coach for the Jaguars.
In September 2009, the Jaguars played their first game against Hargrave Military Academy. The Jaguars won 30-13. The Jaguars competed as independents from 2009-2011. The Jaguars finished undefeated in both 2009 and 2010. They finished with a 23-4 record as independents.
In 2012, the Jaguars moved to the Sunbelt. Their first year in the Sun Belt was abysmal. The Jaguars finished with a 2-11 record. The Jaguars never finished with another winning season in the Sunbelt under Jones. However, in 2014 and 2016 they clinched their first and second bowl game berths. In 2014, they were invited to the Camellia Bowl, where they fell to Bowling Green. In 2016, they lost to the Air Force in the Arizona bowl. Jones resigned towards the end of the 2017 season with a 52–50 overall record.
Steve Campbell took over from 2018-2020. During his three-year tenure, the Jaguars finished with a 9–26 combined record. He was relieved of his duties towards the end of the 2020 season.
Kane Wommack is the current coach at South Alabama. His first season left a lot to be desired. However, in 2022, the Jaguars finished 10-2 and tied for first place in their division.
