UCF Knights Football History

Team History

The University of Central Florida began playing football in 1979. Originally, the Knights were division 3. Dr. Jack O’Leary was the first coach.

In 1985, Gene McDowell took over as head coach. In 1986 Ted Wilson became the first football player to be drafted out of UCF. In 1987 the Knights went 8-3 and went to the division 2 playoffs. The Knights had the ultimate home-field advantage. Their crowd raised the noise so high that other teams couldn’t run their offenses properly. Between 1986 and 1990 the Knights won 24 out of 30 home games. In 1990 they moved to Division 1-AA. In 1990 they went 10-4 and were semi-finalists. In ‘91-‘93 they finished with winning seasons and made the playoffs.

In 1996 the Knights officially went Division I-A. Mike Kruczek became head coach in 1998. Eventual star NFL quarterback Daunte Culpepper led the Knights to a 9-2 season in 1998.

The 2000s

In 2002, the Knights joined the MAC conference. They were successful in their first year as they finished with a 6-2 conference record and were runner-ups in their division.

In 2004, the Knights hired George O’Leary. O’Leary has been the most successful coach in school history. However, in his first year, they finished winless going 0-11. In 2005 they went 8-5 and hosted the Conference championship game. O’Leary finished 2005 with multiple coaching awards. The Knights had success in 2007, finishing with 10 wins. They won their first conference championship game and went to the Liberty bowl. Running back Kevin Smith broke an NCAA record for rushing attempts with 450. He also finished with over 2,500 yards.

In 2009, the Knights had some success finishing with an 8-5 record. They got their first win over a ranked team after beating Houston Cougars who was ranked 12th in the nation. 2010 was a monster season for the Knights. The Knights were ranked, won their division and won the entire conference. 2011-2014 was plagued with NCAA recruiting violations, sanctions and switching to the Big East which would eventually become the AAC.

In 2014, the Knights would go 9-4 under O’Leary. They’d get a bowl game but would lose 34-27 against NC State.O’Leary resigned at the end of the college football season. He finished with an 81-68 record and a 3-4 bowl record.

Scott Frost coached the knights for 2016-2017. The Knights had plenty of success under Frost. The Knights finished undefeated. They went on to beat Memphis Tigers in the AAC championship game. They were invited to the Peach Bowl to play Auburn. The Knights put on an absolute show and beat the Tigers 34-27. Frost left for Nebraska.

Josh Heupel took over from 2018-2020. He went 28-8 and had a 1-2 bowl record. In his first NCAAF season they didn’t lose a game and upped their winning streak to 25 games. Additionally, the Knights boasted a 19-5 conference record. They won the AAC in his first season. His success earned him a job at the University of Tennessee.

In 2021 the Knights hired seasoned coach Gus Malzahn. They finished with a 9-4 record in his first season. They went on to beat Florida in the Gasparilla Bowl.
