(18) Oregon State Beavers vs San Jose State Odds Preview

Beavers in a five-team Pac-12 race, Spartans cover against USC

In what has been a pleasant trend early in the new season, Power-5 teams are going on the road to start their season against non-power five teams.

The Oregon State Beavers (0-0) head down to Northern California to open up their season against the San Jose State Spartans (0-1) who lost, 56-28, to USC last week but managed to cover a 30 ½ point spread. SJS is 8-13 ATS since 2021, while the Beavers have covered 28 of their last 41 games, turning a profit in four straight seasons.

OSU is a 16 ½ road favorite with a total of 55. Kick-off is scheduled for, Sunday, at 3:30 pm ET / 12:30 pm PT and can be seen on the CBS Sports Network. Let’s start our Oregon State vs San Jose State odds preview by breaking down the Beavers.

Former Clemson QB Gets The Start

A familiar name will be under center when the Beavers clash with the Spartans. Former Clemson quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei’s College Football career gets another chance to show why he was chosen after Trevor Lawrence left for the NFL. It never seemed as if Uiagalelei could get out of the Lawrence shadow after three seasons, so the senior decided to go as far away as possible, it seems.

The Tigers were 11-2 when the 6-4, 250-pound quarterback played last season, but that wasn’t good enough after losses to Notre Dame (27-39, 191 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) and South Carolina (8-29, 99, 1 TD, 1 INT). Uiagalelei has completed over 61% of his passes with a 22/7 touchdown touchdown-to-interception ratio in his career.

According to our College Football spread data, the Beavers have been terrific against teams .500 or better, covering 15 of their last 20 opportunities, and 7 of 9 on the road.

Oregon State carries an NCAA football ranking of 18th into this contest. We continue our Oregon State vs San Jose State odds preview by turning our attention to the home team from the Mountain West.

Mountain West In Power Position?

With the ACC voting to extend invites to Stanford, California, and SMU on Friday, this leaves Washington State and Oregon State as the only two schools without a dance partner next season. This leaves an incredible amount of speculation about what will happen to the Mountain West.

Regardless, this will be a chance for a Mountain West team to show the Pac-12 that it does belong on the same field as a Power-5 team, although we’re not sure what the significance of that means anymore. You can’t have a Pac-2 making it clear that there will be further movement.

Anyway, let’s focus on the match-up at hand. San Jose State’s Chevan Cordeiro showed that Uiagalelei won’t be the only quarterback on the field to pay attention to after completing 21 of 38 passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns against USC. He also rushed 10 times for 52 yards. Quali Conley had 108 rushing yards on only six carries to lead the Spartans, and Nick Nash caught six passes for 89 yards and three touchdowns to lead San Jose State receiving.

Despite the cover against USC, the Spartans have typically not been good against teams .500 or better, failing to cover 9 of their last 13 games. This game won’t directly impact that number because this is OSU’s first game, but it does give some insight into how they have fared against the better teams.

We conclude our Oregon State vs San Jose State odds preview by giving our official selection.

NCAA Football Scores Different Week One to Two

You would think a week after playing in a game that featured 84 points with 56 of them going to USC, that the over is the easy play here. 59% of the money agrees with that rational logic, but we’ve been doing this long enough to know that the road paved with gold usually ends up with a ripped-up ticket.

Over the last three seasons, not including USC, the under is 18-10 overall and 10-5 at CEFCU Stadium. A great rule of thumb when betting on football is what you saw last week isn’t what you’ll see the next. We’re betting this game goes under the total.

That does it for our Oregon State vs San Jose State odds preview, we wish you all the best with your wagers this season.
