For Clavel, the 32-year-old was distraught when she got ill and her original bout with Nery had to be delayed by a month.
“I feel bad for the Plata team and for the other boxers on the card,” Clavel said from her home during a video conference last November. “I blame myself. I’m ashamed and have a feeling of guilt. It’s hard emotionally. It’s horrible. I’d prefer to box and to fight. This championship is my dream — to unify the belt. I’m so close.”
But the silver lining to that postponement is more time for Clavel and her team to train. Yes, she’s 32, but she’s still young in boxing terms as she is only five years into her career. And as far as primacy, she has not absorbed much damage. It’s why Clavel is also the sizable favorite on the boxing betting odds compared to Nery.
Now, the unification bout is in sight. And should Clavel win, she will put herself in a prime position to fight Yokasta Valle for all four belts of the division.
